The Midnight Drive-In: Hands Of Steel & Over The Top

This week we’re turning our hats around as we look at two movies that involve arm wrestling.  First up is the Terminator rip off movie Hands Of Steel.  After we’re going Over The Top with a bored Stallone.  Also we talk about what we want on the Roseanne spin off show, Krull, Cargo, Incredibles 2, and Teen Wolf.

The Last Drive-In With Joe Bob Briggs On Friday The 13th

Joe Bob Briggs is proclaiming this his LAST time hosting his Drive-In show.  On Friday the 13th in July Shudder will be hosting 24 hours of movies hosted by Joe Bob Briggs. He’ll be doing his classic format even with movie breaks even though Shudder doesn’t have commercials.  And this is a LIVE event.  No watching it after it happens.  Watch the promo below and then read the details:

JOE BOB TO HOST 24-HOUR MOVIE MARATHON ON FRIDAY THE 13TH THIS JULY ON SHUDDER

I’m gonna put on the black hat, polish the belt buckle, dust off the Lazy-Boy recliner, and settle in at the trailer house for my movie-hosting farewell tour….13 movies starting on Friday the 13th this July on Shudder, the streaming service owned by AMC.

It’ll kick off at 9pm ET (6pmPDT) on Shudder, and we’re going dusk to dawn til almost dusk again. The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs is 13 movies on Friday the 13th with all the classic Joe Bob elements–the trailer house set, a new Mail Girl, digressions, rants, offbeat celebrity interviews, the Drive-In Totals, and interruptions to talk about the movie. (We have commercial breaks on a network that has no commercials. Possibly a television first.)

I’ll be sending out more details soon about exactly how you can sign up for Shudder to watch the show as it airs.

Living the #FigLife Top Five Marvel Legends Figures

Since joining The Syndicate on facebook and seeing everyone’s Marvel Legends collection I had to get back into the action figure game that was not WWE related. I been buying Marvel figures since the 90’s when ToyBiz was making every Marvel character you can think of. I still have most of those figures today but in storage.

What got me buying again was seeing the Marvel Legends Captain America (Infinity War) and Mr. Fantastic and once I got ahold of those figs, the hunt was on for more! Now to my top five…

Kingpin

Before Hasbro, ToyBiz was making Marvel Legends and the Face-Off collection came at the right time for me because I was heavily reading Daredevil and when I saw the two-pack Kingpin vs Daredevil I knew I had to buy it. I’ve seen many Kingpin figs over the years and this one is perfect in every way.

Human Torch

I had many Human Torch figures growing up but none of them ever felt right when it came to comic book likeness. Some figs would be half human and half flams but with ML I think I found “my” Human Torch figure. The flame effects are minimal and just enough.

Hawkeye

Since Hawkeye made his debut in the MCU all I been seeing is MCU Jeremy Renner or sunglass wearing Hawkeye. I prefer the classic comic book version. The only drawback are the accessories, the bow he comes with and quiver is all purple. Wish it was better detailed and colored differently.

Ghost Rider with Flame Cycle

I’m not huge on Ghost Rider but this set is very cool looking. The flames coming off the bike, flaming chain, it all looks nice sitting on a shelf. The figure itself is basic but the head sculpt is nice with a jaw hinge for up and down movement, red eyes for the penance stare.

The Punisher (Netflix)

The spot on likeness of Jon Bernthal is absolutely amazing. The fading on the skull has nice details. Just a great looking figure overall.

With almost every Marvel Legends figures you get a build a figure part to build another character. I have many parts but never actually built a figure. I just buy the figs I want and keep BAF parts in a box. If you are looking for parts, let me know and I’ll send a picture over of what I have. And when it comes to fantasy booking… I want to see a Dolph Lundgren Punisher from the 1989 movie, and a figure of Ravage 2099.

So! What are your favorite Marvel Legends figures? Comment below.

Champs vs Stars: Bank Rollin’ in the Deep

Well, we made it. Another season finale. Who puts on frozen clothes the fastest? Who eats the most gross food? Do the dad bods stand a chance against professional athletes? All these questions and more are answered. Also our interview with Laurel seems to have made waves in the Twitterverse. But hey, those comments were taken out of context.

Star Trek’s Latest Five Year Mission

In 1979 After seeing the world shattering success 20th century Fox had with Star Wars, Paramount studios scrambled to revive the star trek franchise. It seems history is repeating itself yet again as on the heels of Solo the Latest instalment of the Star Wars expanded Universe CBS has contracted Alex Kurtzman to a five-year mission to develop the Star Trek Expanded Universe.

The deal reportedly includes “New Series, Mini-series and other content opportunities” that will expand the Star trek Franchise. The agreement also includes rights to produce other content from Kurtzman and his company, Secret Hideout, who currently produce Hawaii 5-0, Salvation and Instinct. This includes expanding secret hideout’s operations to create other original, non-trek, properties.

This will include the continuation of “Star Trek: Discovery”, which is currently in production on season two. In a fashion that parallels drummers in spinal tap, Alex Kurtzman is also the latest person to be brought on as show runner for the streaming series.

Several shows are currently in some state of development such as: Continue reading Star Trek’s Latest Five Year Mission

The Midnight Drive-In: The Creeping Flesh & Nothing But The Night

Hey look it’s Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee.  Two awesome guys that go great together.  First we check out the thriller with quite a twist Nothing But The Night.  After that we look at what pure evil actually is.  Being really slutty in The Creeping Flesh.  After that we talk Hereditary, The Curse Of Frankenstein, Cargo, I Don’t Feel At Home In This World Anymore, Hotel Artemis, The Endless, and Ginger Snaps.  That’s a lot of movies.

Graveyard Duck Episode 31 – Deja Vu

This week Scott and Wes managed to spend an hour talking about Deja Vu for the NES without ever once making a Deja Vu pun or joke. Before you accuse us of being professional though, you should know we wander off topic many times, and discuss things like Sam and Max, Leisure Suit Larry, and Robert E Howard. Trust me. You’ll enjoy it.

Oh, and check out the Cromcast.

Champs vs. Stars: Crossed Words and Mixed Signals

We’re winding down this season of Champs vs Stars and preparing for Final Reckoning. Wes shows what kind of mastermind he is and why he’s the greatest Challenge politician of all time. Louise and Casper face an uphill challenge to get to the final. Will they get there? I guess we’ll find out next week for the grande finale. Also they misspelled a word. C’mon MTV.

The Midnight Drive-In: Black Belt Jones & The Last Dragon

Well we learned that apparently Canadians burned down the white house in the war of 1812 so we promptly kicked Doug off the show.  Noah and I figured we should learn kung fu to make sure none of this ever happens again and what better way to learn than by watching movies?  First up we checked out the Jim Kelly classic Black Belt Jones.  We followed that up with learning from the Shogun of Harlem in The Last Dragon.  No Canadians are burning down our white house again!

Interview with Libbi Duncan and ASHES Book Giveaway

This past week I sat down with author Libbi Duncan to talk about The Scorching Trilogy, managing time, and advice for future authors… To get a free copy of ASHES, comment below with what you’re currently reading and a winner will be picked a random. Enjoy!

How do you juggle personal life and teaching while having a trilogy to write?

Libbi Duncan: I’m a binge-writer. I don’t write every day, although I’d like to get into that habit eventually. I usually just write on weekends, holidays, and during winter and summer break. I write best late at night, so it generally doesn’t affect my personal life. It is difficult balancing all three though. Sometimes I feel like I don’t have any free time to just relax, but I do enjoy staying busy.

When you first started The Scorching did you know how it was going to end?

LD: I start each book with a general outline and I wrote a vague arc for the trilogy when I started, but both the individual storylines and overall story have changed. Naturally the endings changed along the way as well. I try to let the story tell itself based on what the characters would do as things progress in their world.

How far along are you in finishing the third installment?

LD: This question gives me anxiety. Can I skip it? Haha. Just kidding. I meant to start writing on June 1st, but I’m in the process of moving and my internet hasn’t been connected yet, so I’m behind. I’ve finished the outline and all of the planning, and I know how the first scene will begin. I just haven’t started writing it yet. I hope to have the rough draft finished by the end of July though.

Thoughts on audiobooks vs hardbacks?

LD: I will always prefer hardbacks/paperbacks over e-books/audiobooks, but I love that we have those options. Flexibility in how you read is important, and no one should be judged for choosing one method over another. As a writer, reader, and teacher, I see variety in publishing as nothing but a good thing. So far my books haven’t been made into audiobooks, but I definitely hope they will eventually. I especially love the idea of audiobooks for people who travel a lot or like to listen while exercising.

Any advice for aspiring writers?

LD: First of all, I dislike that phrase. There’s no such thing as an aspiring writer, in my opinion. There are only people who write and people who don’t write. If you write, you’re a writer.

You can be an aspiring author, though, and that path is difficult to follow. There are countless books on how to be a writer or how to get published; however, there’s no 100% foolproof method, and anyone who says otherwise is trying to sell you their book, not help you. For me, the best advice is as follows:

1.) Read as much as you can.

2.) Write as much as you can.

3.) Revise and edit what you write only after you finish a complete draft. (But again, some authors say the exact opposite.)

4.) Get feedback from both readers and writers, and be careful asking friends to read your work early-on.

5.) Don’t show anyone your first draft. It’s going to suck. Don’t worry. You’ll get better.

6.) Research the writing process as well as the publishing process. Knowledge is power.

7.) Find a support group, either online or in person. I have two writing groups online, one in real life, several critique partners, author friends, beta readers, and loads of awesome friends and family that encourage me. I couldn’t do it without them.

8.) Find what works for you. Where you write. When you write. Paper/pen vs. Laptop. How you edit.

9.) Don’t be afraid to bend or break the rules, but be careful and use common sense.

10.) Persevere. Don’t give up when it gets hard. Don’t give up when you get bad feedback or a bad review. Keep writing.

Ashes: Book Two of The Scorching Trilogy is available now on Amazon.

Interview: Darrell

Fan-favorite and one of the best players to play the game, Darrell is in the house! We ask the standard questions, but we also had to squeeze in some questions about Sarah Greyson, the Gauntlet Queen and one of my favorite players. Darrell was a super charming and personable guy, and we bought him hot dogs. We’re basically best friends now. This wraps up our interviews from the Challenge Throwdown for the Cause event in Yorkville. Thanks for listening!

Interview: Melinda

Melinda asked us to get a little weird with it, and we did. I think we made her a little uncomfortable, but that’s ok because she did the same to us. Or at least she tried. We haven’t seen Melinda on the show for quite some time, but we were still excited to meet her in person. We had a separate conversation before our interview that I wish we would’ve recorded but alas, this is all you get of the beautiful Melinda.

Champs Vs. Stars: When Loyalty Is Spot On

This week we find out which team Booby is sending into the Elimination.  Also a Champ has a tirade and accuses another team of cheating.  After that we find a twist that lowers the competition to just 4 teams.

Interview: Nicole Z.

We weren’t sure what to make of Nicole exactly, but her over-the-top presence we see on TV made for quite the charming, interesting and exciting interactions we had at the Challenge Throwdown for the Cause event. She was very candid maybe a bit drunk for this interview, so prepare yourself.

Interview: Derrick K.

Let’s be honest, our podcasts are not competitors, so we love having Derrick on a show other than Challenge Mania. Word of warning, this was quite late in the night and many drinks were had, leading to some distraction and some nonsense. Challenged Superfan Kelly interrupts this episode to give Derrick a foot massage which certainly didn’t help the distraction issues. Derrick was super cool, very outgoing and we’re thrilled to have this fan-favorite on the show.

The Midnight Drive-In: Red & Blue Ruin

We were feeling too good about ourselves so we decided to bring the mood down a bit by watching the 2008 Jack Ketchum adaptation RED and then the 2013 Jeremy Sauliner movie Blue Ruin.  We also discuss the cancellation of Roseanne, pooping in Tim Hortons, and films such as Split Image, Murder Party, Flash Gordon, Dune, The Starman TV show, and a bit of Solo.

Interview: Jordan Wiseley

Thanks to Jordan for taking time out of his evening during the Challenge Throwdown event to talk to us about horror movies, his production company, his motorcycles and more. Unfortunately Tori D. wasn’t able to join him on this trip, or we could’ve helped figure out if that relationship has staying power. During the interview we definitely sort out why he and Laurel didn’t work out. We’re a podcast, but we’re also relationship counselors apparently. Some people insist their partners fold instead of crinkle.
