A Conversation With Disco Stu

With WrestleMania 33 only weeks away, I sat down with Lawrence (Disco Stu) to get his thoughts on WrestleMania, podcasting, The Undertaker and so much more.

WrestleMania 33 is next month are you excited about any of the matches?

So far the only one that really has peaked my interest is the Jericho vs. Owens match. There is potential for some good matches that haven’t been booked yet. A lot will depend on how AJ Styles is booked. The E also seems on path to book a Neville vs. Austin Aries match which I would pop for.

The Undertaker has been booked to face Roman Reigns, do you see Undertaker walking out of Mania with the win or will we see 23-2 in the streak?

At this point I don’t see why they should book the Undertaker to lose this match unless its to fully cement a Roman heal turn. The Undertaker is special and should only be beaten if its going to result in something that will change the company for the better. To beat Undertaker just to push a guy who has failed to get over with the fans as a face over and over again would be a huge waste of a valuable Undertaker loss.

It has been said WrestleMania is the can’t miss wrestling event of the year. But I disagree, last year I watched Pro Wrestling Guerrilla’s BOLA tournament and to me it was better than Mania. In your opinion, is there any “big event” shows that could or get close to surpassing WrestleMania if you take out all the glitz and glamour, celebrities, etc?

I don’t think it’s fair to take out the glitz and glamour as that is as big of a part of WrestleMania as the wrestling is. I agree there are shows that are better wrestling shows than Mania, as you mentioned BOLA and Wrestle Kingdom year after year deliver at the highest level. The thing that makes Mania different though is the glitz and glamour, the big show feel. WrestleMania is a spectacle and nothing will come close to topping it.

We all read them and we all have our go to people when it comes to reading the dirt sheets. What’s your thoughts on people like Meltzer, Keller, and Satin… Are they fair with their criticism on pro wrestling?

For the most part dirt sheets are just another form of entertainment for the “smart” fan. They serve a purpose, that is to allow smarts to think they know what’s going to happen or to give us the “inside” scope. Whether it’s true or not. As long as you read them for what they are and that is an extension of the entertainment wrestling provides.

I will say I think Satin is right on. He is very reliable and doesn’t give into the pressure to break news on a weekly basis. If there is a story he will pursue it, but so far I have not witnessed him create a story for the sake of breaking news. That is something I believe all the other dirt sheets have been guilty of.

I like Satin, he’s good and his credibility hasn’t insulted my intelligence, when talking about his website or podcast.

Since leaving the E Cody Rhodes has been leaving his mark in many indie promotions. Thoughts on the grandson of a plumber since leaving the E?

I think Cody has done a great job of building his name into something creditable over his last eight or so months. The key is now for him to do something with it. We have watched ten’s of indie darlings over the years get over but then not do anything with that momentum. I think his end game is to go back to the E and show them what he has done and that they were wrong. If there is money to be made VKM will swallow his pride and have him back. The problem is that a shelf life for an indy darling is two years tops before that shine starts to wear off. I would like to see him talking with the E in early 2018 about a return. I think it’s what he ultimately wants and the fans win because we will get to see him weekly and hopefully with a rocket ship attached to him.

To change the subject a bit. You are someone who host their own podcast, The Awesome 80’s Pod. Nowadays it seems like every wrestling podcast needs a hook and that hook being having a wrestler on their show to give insight on today’s product. As for myself, I’m not too keen of those types of podcast. What’s your opinion?

So I was in early on the originals, Colt, Austin, JR, Jericho. I however have backed off. I still subscribe to all of those but I rarely to more than one show a month per show. I’m a completist and used to believe I had to listen to everyone start to finish to feel whole. The guests are mostly recycled and most hooks are similar. There are 100’s of them out there now and they are all too similar. To be honest the only must list wrestling podcast out there is Something to Wrestle with Bruce Prichard. I plan my Fridays around it. The Monday Nitro version is also good but not nearly as good as Prichard. The cohost Conrad has been friends with my show since he first entered the podcasting realm and now he had the #1 podcast in all of wrestling. It feels good to see a friend succeed.

Over the past month or so WWE has been announcing the 2017 Hall of Fame class. People like Rick Rude, Kurt Angle, Beth Phoenix and Diamond Dallas Page to name a few. Thoughts on the class of 2017 and who would you like to see go into the Hall?

Brad Maddox, I kid I kid. Actually I don’t think too much about the HOF. I have been to two of the last three ceremonies and I love the spectacle of it. Ultimately it’s all about entertainment. It’s a show produced to get the best fan reaction. There is always a little truth a little spectacle and a lot of awesomeness. People hate on the HOF which I think is ridiculous. The business is a work. The HOF is a work. Enjoy it or stop watching. Yes their are wrestlers in there who don’t deserve it and wrestlers who should be but aren’t. When it makes sense from an entertainment stand point they will be in. I saw the Ultimate Warriors last three public events in person and to this day I am only half joking when I say Vince booked his death perfectly. I mean Vince knows WTF is up.

Lastly… The year is still young, what are you looking forward to seeing in pro wrestling this year?

Honestly there is not one thing I look forward to specifically. Don’t get me wrong I’m not some old smart who thinks they can’t do anything right since Smokey Mountain folded. I love the business and I love the surprise aspect. When I was younger I would had notebooks full of fantasy booked cards and I would have WCW & WWF booked out months ahead of time. Now I just watch for the experience and enjoyment of the shows. I don’t agree with everything they put out but ultimately the product dictates whether I watch more or don’t. My biggest thrill will be what they do with Joe and if my man SN gets called up from NXT. Either way I’ll watch and consume it’s just a matter of how much and only they can dictate that.

There you have it… A bit of an inside scoop from Disco Stu.

Capcom Brings Back The Disney Afternoon Collection

Get ready to relive your childhood in the best way possible.  Capcom is bring 6 titles back from their deal with Disney in the 80s and 90s.  For $20 you’ll get Ducktales, Chip N’ Dales Rescue Rangers, Darkwing Duck, and Talespin along with sequels to Ducktales and Rescue Rangers which I don’t remember but I am all about.

For younger players that don’t remember how hard games like these were they have put in special options like REWIND which can help you keep from accidentally jumping into the abyss which was always my problem.  I’d yell at my controller “I HIT JUMP DAMN IT!  WHY DID IT DO THAT!?!?!”

They’re beng released on XboX One, PS4 and PC on April 18th.  Are you excited for the return of these titles?

TLH Episode 78 Bonus – Logan

Well, here you go. In addition to our regular episode this week, enjoy an hour or so of Doug and Bryan nerding out over Logan.(Scott makes an appearance at the end.) Be warned that this is VERY heavy on the spoilers.

As always, we welcome feedback at thelasthorrorcast@gmail.com and on our Facebook page or leave us a voicemail at 601-564-TLHP. Be sure to subscribe and leave us a review in iTunes.

TLH Episode 78 – John Carpenter’s Vampires and Near Dark

This week on episode one of Bill Paxton memorial month, we take a look at a couple of vampire westerns with Near Dark (yes, Doug finally gets to talk about it) and John Carpenter’s Vampires. We also discuss The Monster, He Never Died, as well as some other randomness.

Note: we do NOT talk about Logan at the end of the episode, despite what we claim. That segment went on long enough that we decided to make it its own bonus episode.

Discovery has a captain

In an announcement sure to cause even more harry Potter/Star trek fan fic (it exists I assure you) Jason Issacs has been announced as Captain Lorca of the USS Discovery. Issacs is known by fans primarily for his portrayal of Lucias Malfoy in the Harry potter films and sci-fi fans from the underrated Event Horizon.

Captain Lorca joins the expanding discovery crew including Sonequa Martin-Green as Lieutenant Commander Rainsford, Doug Jones as lieutenant Saru, Anthony Rapp as science officer Stamets and Mary Wiseman playing cadet Tilly (who we can only hope is not this series Wesley Crusher). Dispite beginning production on the series the crew seem to be missing a few key members most notably a doctor, communications officer or anyone from engeneering.

The crew of the starship shenzhou have been anounced headed by Michelle yoah as Capt. Grorgiou, Maulik Pancholy as chief medical officer Nambue and junior officer Connor played by Sam Vartholomeos. While it has not been announced the role the USS Shenzhou will have in the series early speculation is that at some point it will be damaged or destroyed and the crews will combine.
In an unexpected casting announcement James Frain, of orphan black and Gotham fame, will be portraying Vulcan ambassador Sarek. Originally portrayed by legendary actor Mark Leonard, this will be only the second time a character has been played by to actors in the same time line.* the other being that of Zephram Cochrane played first by Glenn Corbett in the TOS episode “Metamorphosis” and later by James Cromwell in “Star Trek: First contact”

*I am not counting the TNG episode “Rascals” as the characters were de-aged due to a transporter malfunction and were restored by the conclusion of the episode so I would chalk this up to being akin to “stunt doubles”

TLH Episode 77 – Basket Case and Brain Damage

This week we discuss a couple of Frank Henenlotter films in what might be our shortest episode yet. We try to put together some intelligent thoughts about Basket Case and Brain Damage, but it doesn’t go so well. We wrap up  with Bryan’s thoughts on Get Out, so there’s at least that to listen to.

Geek Nerdery Trailer Park

Time again to check out some trailers from upcoming movies we’re excited to check out.

Baby Driver

I’m always up for some Edgar Wright.  I was sad when he departed Ant Man but it looks like he put his time after that to good use with Baby Driver.  Lots of car porn for those that enjoy such things and a star studded cast like Kevin Spacey, Jamie Foxx, and Jon Hamm.  I can’t wait to check it out.

Wonder Woman

This one seems to focus a little more on her origin than the WWI setting that the film will be mostly taking place in.  I’m curious what origin they are going with in this version.

Atomic Blonde

It’s being called the female John Wick with I guess it has good reason as it’s directed by the same guy and the action seems pretty similar.  Charlize Theron gets all actiony while being backed up by Toby Jones, John Goodman, and James McAvoy.  Based on the Oni Press comic The Coldest City.  Looks like a lot of fun.

TLH Episode 76 – Robocop and Total Recall

DirecTV Drops Chiller TV

If I’m not watching WWE or The Walking Dead my television is always on Chiller TV. Don’t care if it’s a marathon of The X-Files or an heavy edited movie like Beyond Re-Animator I always found joy on that channel.

Two movies that I watched on Chiller and went out and bought was Return of the Living Dead: Necropolis (2005) and Return of the Living Dead: Rave to the Grave (2005). I didn’t even know there was more Return movies after part three. Slasher was a fantastic series Chiller aired in 2016. Lastly the Chiller and Scream Factory original movie, Fender Bender (2016) was a highlight for me when it came to horror movies last year.

Reason I’m writing all this is I found out that DirecTV-AT&T has dropped Chiller TV from their cable packages and or you gotta pay a higher cable package to get the channel back, that’s what the dirt sheets are saying and it’s disappointing. I guess SyFy will be my go to for light night horror at 3 a.m. It’s an end of an era in the Massive One’s household.

Thoughts On WWE FastLane (2017)

The booking for Bill Goldberg in the WWE is ridiculous. He has had nothing but squash matches and tonight Goldberg defeated Kevin Owens in less than a minute, yes thanks to Jericho but that’s not the point. I am so disappointed in the E for throwing away Owens’ title run and giving the championship to a part timer who wants to show his family he can still go. From what I’ve seen, Goldberg couldn’t last five minutes in a ring. He even jobbed to a door to his forehead.

The rest of FastLane I skimmed through. I did watch Bayley-Charlotte and it was a good match. Now we are on the road to WrestleMania and hopefully it’s better than the last few PPV’s the E put together.

Deadpool Goes Ultra Meta In New Teaser Trailer

While Logan is being hailed as one of the best Comic Book movies of all time (after the abysmal X-Men Origins and The Wolverine), it seems that our hopes of getting Hugh Jackman as Wolverine one more time to pair with Ryan Reynold’s Deadpool is D.O.A. However, that simply wont stop Mr. Pool from taking another swipe at the Australian actor.

Paired with Logan, Fox drops one of the best teaser trailers ever right into our collective laps to hype up the Deadpool sequel that begins shooting May 1st in Vancouver, Canada. The trailer is rife with in jokes, meta humor and even gag straight out of Marvel’s long time rival, DC Comics. Plus, there’s even something for the ladies! (Or the guys, we don’t judge!)

Check out the teaser below. Deadpool 2 is slated for sometime in 2018.

Duck Tales And TMNT News

I still love me some cartoons.  I’m sure people walking into my house as I’m sitting there in my gym shorts I use as pajamas, eating a bowl of cereal, and watching my cartoons are amused at why a 37 year old man would watch cartoons.  Hey, I still love the characters and the story telling is top notch.  Doesn’t matter to me that it’s animated.  But it’s time for some Good News/Bad News.

Good News:

The first trailer for the new Duck Tales series for Disney XD is out.  And it looks like it’s going to be a lot of fun.  Most important is we get to hear David Tennant as Scrooge McDuck for the first time.  And I gotta say I love it.  Perfect casting.

Bad News:
The newest TMNT cg animated show looks like it’s winding down with season 5 only to be replaced with an old school 2d animated version.  I’ve been a big fan of the show when it launched and I thought did a great job of incorporation of TMNT lore while also doing some things to make it all fresh again.  I’m bummed they are leaving this incarnation behind.  My guess would be the voice cast will be getting too expensive after the 5th season so it’s off for another reboot rather than shelling out (hehe see what I did there) for voice actors like Seth Green and Sean Astin to reprise their roles in future seasons.  Who knows.  Guess we’ll wait and see what the new show holds.

New Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 Trailer And Poster

We’ve been getting lots of really good trailers for upcoming movies that I am super excited for.  At the top of that list is Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2.  I had no idea who the Guardians even were even though I have been reading comics since I was young.  The space adventures just never excited me.  But the first trailer for the first movie caught me.  I was excited to see what would probably be just an okay movie.  Was I wrong.  I LOVED the first movie.  It’s probably my favorite out of the Marvel films.  I always tell people leaving the theater I felt like I did the first time I watched Star Wars.

Now with Vol. 2 coming my excitement is hardly containable.  Add to this already great cast Kurt Russell then guess what?  I’m predicting a 5 time watch at the theater alone.  In this new trailer we get to see more of the colorful world we’ll be venturing into this time around and we get the confirmation that Kurt Russell is in fact Peter’s father.  May can’t come soon enough.
