Beth Phoenix Into The HOF, Plus Flash And Riverdale

It was announced tonight on Monday Night RAW that Beth Phoenix will be inducted into the 2017 WWE Hall of Fame.

I’ve been hearing rumors of Phoenix going into the Hall for a few months and I was even saying it’s too soon, and I’m a Beth Phoenix fan. Because of her, she made the Divas division worth watching when all you had was three minute squash matches.

If Beth Phoenix was around today she would totally dominate the Divas Revolution Era. If I had to fantasy book her into a match, I’ll put her against Charlotte Flair.

On a few unrelated notes… I’m digging Riverdale. I’ve read a handful of Archie comics in the past and if they were as cool as Riverdale is I may have kept reading them. And yes, I’m in the same boat of people that’s saying Riverdale is a bit like Twin Peaks.

I’m still grinding through Arrow, sometimes it’s to hard to watch. But I been told to stick with it, because they are at least trying to make the series good again.

And then there’s Flash… It hasn’t failed me yet as a series. I’m really into the Killer Frost storyline. Danielle Panabaker is great playing good and evil. I just hope, if she does turn heel she won’t leave the show because she’s an awesome actress.

Bill Paxton In Memorium

I was off of the internet for most of yesterday as I was playing video games and just having a relaxing Sunday.  Imagine my shock when I check Facebook and see that Bill Paxton passed away.  Talk about my childhood dying.

I think the first thing I remember him in was Weird Science as the asshole brother Chet.  Then the more and more I saw of him I realized I loved this guy.  He always put so much into each of his characters.  They were always varied but there was always still a charm to him.  I feel like he was like a real life Han Solo.  Just that charisma.

As I got older and sadly we started to see less and less of him, as Hollywood is want to do, my senses would prick up if I saw he was in something.  I would always watch just because I knew even if the movie/tv show sucked that he would bring so much to his role.  I about blew a gasket when I saw he was coming to Agents of Shield for a multi episode arc.  More Paxton is always a great thing.  And of course he nailed it.

So this news has made me very somber.  So many memories through out my movie watching life.  Always more Paxton.  Always.

Hulu Brings The King With Castle Rock Series

WHAT IS GOING ON!!?!??!?  As a certified King nerd imagine my mind exploding on Friday when the below teaser trailer was dropped online by J.J. Abrams company Bad Robot.  Anyone who has listened to me babble about King for years knows I’ve always wished that a cinematic Stephen King universe was a thing but with the rights to his books being spread across multiple big name film studios it was never going to happen.  Well maybe I’m wrong.  Maybe.

They haven’t come right out and said what this is other than it’s a 10 episode series on Hulu that will cover multiple stories across King’s works.  No word on which stories or novels.  The fictional town of Castle Rock was first shown to us constant readers in The Dead Zone and would then go on to be the setting for many of King’s biggest stories.  The Body (Stand By Me), Cujo, The Dark Half, Needful Things, and multiple short stories take place there.  Also such books as Christine, IT, and The Tommyknockers make reference to the town.  So it’s connections are vast.  Until we know more about what this is going to be all we have is the all too short teaser below.  I am beyond excited.

American Horror Story To Tackle Trump

Never one to shy away from controversy, American Horror Story producer Ryan Murphy has announced that the next season of the beloved anthology series will take it’s cues from this years election.

During an appearance on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen, Murphy let it spill that this season will be getting a tad political. When pressed if there will be a trump-esque character on the show, Murphy gave a very Trump like “Maybe”

Gore Verbinski Exclusive Interview

In the new film A CURE FOR WELLNESS, set in a remote Alpine spa, the film centers on star Dane DeHaan as Lockhart, an overly driven Wall Street stockbroker who is sent by his firm to retrieve the company’s CEO, Pembroke (Harry Groener), a patient at the spa, who has made it clear he is not leaving. Once Lockhart arrives at the picturesque and serene sanitarium, the miracle cure the patients are receiving, seem to be making them more ill. As Lockhart digs deeper into the enigma that the cure provides for its patients, he befriends a young woman, Hannah (Mia Goth), a mysterious patient herself and Mrs. Watkins (Celia Imrie), a patient who after doing her own investigation, has some answers that compel Lockhart to compromise his safety and sanity. Lockhart is soon diagnosed with the same ailment as the other patients by Dr. Volmer (Jason Isaacs), the institute’s director and is now trapped himself. Soon Lockhart questions what is his basis of fulfillment and what being well truly means.
On February 9th, I had the fortune to speak with Oscar winning director, Gore Verbinski over the phone regarding the film, behind the scenes circumstances, teeth and space pirates.

Gore Verbinski: Hello!

CG: Hi!

GV: Hi Cati!

CG: Thank you for speaking with me today for Geek Nerdery.

GV: Pleasure.

CG: I have to say, your movie made an impact on me even this morning, getting a glass of water at work and it made me look at it differently.

GV: Fantastic. I hope it has the same effect on what makes people well in the health spa.

CG: I wanted to know with the aspects of the spa, water, eels which I can see as snakes, heights, confined spaces and dentistry, you’ve almost nailed the major phobias of most people, besides clowns and spiders. (he laughs) Do you think that fears contribute to wellness or make people feel better if they confront their fears?

GV: Well I think in our movie there is this place, high above the clouds in the Alps and it has been there for a long time and has watched humanity thru the Industrial Revolution and the advent of personal computers, our obsession with our devices, our cell phones and it’s offering a diagnosis and as Lockhart played by Dane DeHaan is summoned to this place, he is sort of slipping off the map and he is no longer in a waking state and entering this dream logic, so we are taking something very tranquil and soothing and this place of purification and then slowly corrupting it. We are turning those dreams into nightmares and bring there all your personal phobias as you make a movie like this. You try to show them to people in a private room.

www.acureforwellness.com

CG: Definitely. My primary job is working for a dentist, so I have to say you guys did an excellent job in showing the teeth and gums in the x-rays because I read those x-rays and I was probably the only one in that theatre that knew exactly what was going on and that..that was not good.

GV: Yeah, you know it was weird, Cati. As I was on the shoot, I had a problem with a tooth and had to go to a German dentist and in Germany, not really knowing anybody to make this movie and it was very ironic having to be in this chair after constructing this scene in the movie, two guys in masks over me, drilling your tooth, speaking German to each and I had no idea what they were saying. It was uniquely horrifying.

CG: That sounds horrifying! Why did you feel like you needed to make this movie now?

GV: Well, I haven’t really been in this genre for a while and it is a fun place to operate and you are watching Dane Dehaan’s character, Lockhart sort of slowly become assimilated in this place and reluctantly becoming a patient in this facility but really YOU are the patient. You are in a darkened room and worries enshroud an image and narrative to conduct an experiment on the audience. I think that there isn’t really another genre that allows that to occur in quite the same way and or allows you to be as covert in your kind of spellcasting. So I don’t know if that answers the question but I do like and enjoy the process.

CG: That totally answers the question. Were there any behind the scenes circumstances that put you in a different creative direction while filming?

GV: You are always, once you start, like a blank page, for myself and the writer Justin Haythe. By the time I got to the shoot everything, it was pretty precisely planned but then inevitably, you are in triage mode pretty quickly. Whether everybody’s good or when on location our stage caught fire and an entire stage burnt down, so here you adjust and try to hold on to what is most precious and move things around to try to come out with exactly what you need.

CG: Set wise I knew nothing about the castle that you filmed at and it is now on my bucket list.

GV: It is a great place.
CG: It is absolutely breathtaking and from the start this film has some of the most beautiful scenes in cinematography and film making I have ever seen. When you captured the train going into the tunnel, How did you do that with the camera next to the train? That was mesmerizing.

GV: Yeah, that is a really interesting location in Switzerland, where we had to really measure down to the millimeter in the clearance of that camera with that tunnel. So at first we went really slowly and we had attached our camera to the side of the train and backed up and pray that there wasn’t a sway left or right on the track or another train while the camera was going thru there. The movie it really is about two worlds. So you have Lockhart as the Modern Man and there is this, is this kind of ancient place and in the end Lockhart and Hannah in a way don’t belong in either of those worlds so reflections become very important and splitting apart with things and that was one of those locations as soon as I got there, knew as soon as we got there, you start to play with the camera and lens, and it was the location scout that found that place and I immediately knew that was a shot we were going to let play.

CG: Why do you think geeks will like this movie?

GV: I think the fact that you don’t know anything about it, ya know? I think so often these days we go to see a movie and maybe we’ve played the video game or we know the toy, read the book or comic strip or there’s a theme park and this allows you to get back to the time when you went to movies you didn’t know anything about the story and geeking out on that. That’s what excites me. I love finding an old movie I’ve never heard of or never seen and someone refers to it and like rediscover every champion in cinemascope. So serene for me in itself and for everybody, so yeah I think we try to make something even for A audience and not for the masses and hopefully they will find it and those who like it will feel like this one..is a love letter to them.

CG: Who is your favorite space pirate?

GV: My favorite space pirate???

CG: Yes

GV: Oh my God, I don’t know. Can I get back to you on that? You caught me, I always hate those questions like, what’s your favorite movie because they evolve and they change and as soon as I blurt them out, blurt out an answer they are stuck forever… in amber and I’m an evolving being. So who’s yours?

CG: Mine actually is Malcolm Reynolds from Serenity and Firefly

pause

GV: Wow, okay..I hadn’t thought of that.

CG: Most people will say Han Solo and ya know there will be others and even recently there is Mark Watney, Matt Damon from the Martian, who even proclaims himself a space pirate.

GV: That’s true, that’s true, that’s interesting. I’m sorry, I’m going to disappoint you Cati, it’s just that I don’t have a witty enough answer.

CG: No, no I want people to think about it because technically Barbarella is a space pirate as well.

GV: That’s true. Well listen it’s been nice chatting.

CG: It’s been nice chatting with you and if you are ever in Chicago and need any dental work, please keep my number and let me know.

GV: Haha, I’ll look you up. Fantastic!

Emma To Emmalina And Back Again

Emmalina made her WWE return tonight on Monday Night RAW… Those “Premiering Soon” vignettes has been running since October and I was beginning to think the E was treating her like Brodus Clay, building up this beast of a wrestler but only got the Funkasaurus.

Basically, Emmalina walked out on stage and cut a strange promo and left. From what I got out of it is, Emmalina wants to be Emma again… No idea. Hopefully she turns back as a heel and brings along her sunglasses and leather gloves. Because that was the best incarnation of her g‪immick.‪

R.L. Stine Confirms Upcoming Fear Street Movie

It really should be no surprise after the Goosebumps movie did so well that some production companies are looking into what other R.L. Stine properties they may be able to get their hands on.  Now it looks like Fear Street is going to be getting a movie of it’s own.

Fear Street was a teenage horrorish series Stine wrote in the late 80s all the way up to 1999.  I never read them as they seemed like girl books to me but looking back at how much I like 80s slashers I probably would have gotten a kick out of them.  I’m wondering if it’s too late to go back.  It’s cool to see a 37 year old guy reading a Fear Street book right?

Are you guys excited for a Fear Street movie?  For me it seems like a series would do better with the teenage horror series seeming to be an in thing right now.  But I guess we’ll see.

Elimination Chamber Aftermath (2017)

I totally forgot that Elimination Chamber was an all SmackDown Pay Per View, because I was looking forward to Kevin Owens defending his championship against Goldberg. But that will take place at Fastlane next month.

I pretty much skipped the first half because The Walking Dead was on but Orton-Harper put on a great match. Liked to see Harper win because Orton already is going to WrestleMania and this loss would not hurt him at all.

The main event was good. Baron Corbin put on a strong performance. Cena-Styles never disappoints as always. But it was Bray Wyatt who became the new WWE Champion and it’s been a long time coming… Side Note: Like the new look to the Elimination Chamber.

When WrestleMania comes around and the E doesn’t change their card we will see Wyatt-Orton for the WWE Championship. I say keep it on Wyatt, he doesn’t need it but it’s nice to see him with it. He’s like Jake Roberts or Roddy Piper, so good he doesn’t need a championship.

See you at Fastlane…

Teen Titans: The Judas Contract Trailer Drops

I’m a life long Marvel fan boy but one area that I think most can agree that DC is rocking Marvel’s socks off is its recently minted shared animated movie universe. Now, following amazingly quick on the heels of long anticipated Justice League Dark, DC is wasting no time in keeping its fans salivating by dropping the trailer for Teen Titans: The Judas Contract.

When the DC animated universe was originally conceived, the Judas Contract was one of the first story lines that WB Animation wanted to adapt. However, there were worries that an animated movie that didn’t involve big hitters of DC (Supes, The Bat, The JLA etc…) wouldn’t not be able to move sales of the flick.

However, after extremely positive reviews of its Justice League movies and most recently the great reviews and sales numbers of Justice League Dark, DC is dropping one of the Teen Titans best story lines straight into our collective laps.

The story is said to be thus – “Tara Markov is a girl who has power over earth and stone; she is also more than she seems. Is the newest Teen Titan an ally or a threat? And what are the mercenary Deathstroke’s plans for the Titans?”

The story has been done before in the Teen Titans animated show to high acclaim but with a family friendly bent, Now that the movies are taking on a more mature tone, it will be interesting to see how the Titans handle the betrayal and the coming of one of their biggest villains.

The Judas Contract is helmed by Jay Oliva, who is no virgin when it comes to art work and super heroes having done art work and story boards of Deadpool, BvS, the upcoming Wonder Woman and Thor: Ragnarok.
