2016… The Year That Failed

To be honest I don’t remember how I started 2016 but the months to come saw some major deaths in entertainment with the likes of David Bowie, Gene Wilder, Anton Yelchin, and Princess Leia herself, Carrie Fisher. Those are just some of the names that 2016 took from us. In the wrestling business Chyna, Balls Mahoney and Axl Rotten lost their life’s this year.

With the bad you also have the good… 2016 brought us some good movies like Rogue One, Captain America: Civil War, and Suicide Squad. But on the small screen Tv shows like The Flash was fantastic! and The Walking Dead introduced us to Negan, and now everyone can see how good an actor Jeffrey Dean Morgan is.

Pro Wrestling Guerrilla put on one hell of a three night event with BOLA. AJ Styles made his WWE debut at the Royal Rumble and in September saw Styles defeat Dean Ambrose to win the WWE Championship.

Side Note: CM Punk lost his first fight in the UFC. He’s a bit overrated when it comes to his stuff outside WWE or wrestling in general. And Lesnar-Goldberg had a shit match.

What’s to come in 2017? To be honest, I don’t see Ring of Honor lasting much longer. With their agent talents going to the WWE performance center to be trainers and people like Michael Elgin leaving ROH in a work-shoot gimmick then deciding to leave ROH all together in December.

On the WWE side of things… I’m loving the women’s division in NXT and I see it growing in 2017. I hope to see Samoa Joe, Johnny Gargano, and Nakamura make it to the main roster.

In Tv and movie, I have high expectations for Power Rangers but after seeing the promo figure for Goldar, I just don’t know now. Logan looks like it’s going to be good. I like the X-Men-Wolverine-First Class films. Hopefully we will see more or the rumored Tv series will be good.

And lastly, on a personal note. 2016 for myself has been good. Went to an awesome Halloween party at Ship’s Wheel. I learned how to two-step and haven’t looked back since. Thanks to Ashley, Reigh, Taylor and the one person that started it all Stacy. I can go to any honky tonk and have a ball… I also lived through the fall of Drunken Zombie, a podcast and blog site… somewhat all about horror. But it wasn’t long until I was writing again, right here at Geek-Nerdery! (Cheap Pop). But for a complete rundown of my year, just visit Doiner.com. and there you have it! 2016 is about to be over. Hopefully no more deaths! Massive!

NBA JAM (XboX 360)

I recently been playing a lot of NBA JAM for the XboX 360 and it’s bringing me back to the days when I played it on the SEGA Genesis. The 360 version plays as NBA JAM: Tournament Edition, but with updated graphics, audio, and a few added punch-blocks to steal the ball. It’s 100% nostalgia!

The game is a bit faster than what I remember. I haven’t looked at the options to turn down the speed or difficulty, but winning six games out of ten isn’t bad for a plug in play.

I recommend NBA JAM for the 360 if you just wanna have a good time playing a fast paced basketball game and 90’s nostalgia! Now to find a copy of NFL: Blitz.

My First Love Was Princess Leia

I think she was really the first love for most boys my age.  My wife didn’t seem to understand why I cried the first time I saw the trailer for Force Awakens.  I had to explain that for a creative type that when you were younger and you played with your Star Wars toys that you had to create new adventures because there weren’t any.  Then at 36 here it was.  The adventures were continuing.  They were real.  Everything my mind had made up as a kid could now be real.  It was everything I had wanted my whole life without realizing it.

Princess Leia of course played into that.  Seeing the original Star Wars trilogy when I did at 5 years old (or even before for all I remember) it bonded deeply to my soul.  Everything I did from then forward had Star Wars involved somehow even if it wasn’t apparent at first.  Somewhere in the back of my mind it would always be there in every interaction.  Even as a grown man I can’t pick up a flashlight without making the Lightsaber noise in my head when I turn it on.

But enough about that.  This is about Love right?  After watching what became A New Hope you immediately put yourself into the movie.  When you hear Luke says those words “I’m Luke Skywalker, I’m Hear To Rescue You.” you want to put yourself in that spot.  You want to be the one that is there to rescue the Princess.  You want to be the hero that blows up the Death Star.  I think that wanting to protect the Princess makes you fall in love with her.  Especially at 5 years old.  You immediately feel that protective bond.  Plus she’s pretty awesome.  You find out that she’s not just some damsel in distress.  And you find out later on she’s actually pretty bad ass herself.  But that first moment of seeing her on screen will connect with me forever.  I fell in love with her without even realizing what that was.  Of course when I got older it became about the gold bikini because I’m a man and puberty does awful things to your brain but at 5 that unabashed love was there.

Seeing her again in Force Awakens made me get butterflies in my stomach.  Seeing your first love again.  I know Princess Leia and Carrie Fisher are not the same but try telling 5 year old me that.  So when I read that she had had a heart attack I was sad and upset.  Waking up to the news this morning that Carrie Fisher had passed destroyed me.  Thank you.  For a long time you were my only hope.

Thoughts On WWE2K17

Christmas was good to me this year with WWE2K17 waiting in my stocking. After a day of updates and DLC, I finally sat down and played it. You gotta remember I was still playing WWE2K16 for the XboX 360 since its release. Now playing 2K17 on an XboX One is a big improvement. I still have to work out the new submission reversal and as I said in 2K16, there is a one to two second lag when reversing a punch or grapple. But over time I’ll get the hang of it.

The roster alone is stacked! and adding DLC to it, the match making is endless. I went ahead and unlocked all legends and I’m very pleased with the likes of Dusty Rhodes, Arn Anderson, Scott Hall and Kevin Nash. With DLC I did get Goldberg and Nakamura, both worth the couple bones I spent.

I also dabbled in community creations thanks to Drunken Zombie Facebook Fan Dave Drasheff, and found about ten CAWs. Such as Steiner Brothers, Hollywood Hogan, and Chris Hero. With some CAWs looking so good there’s no need for DLC at times. But you gotta have that entrance and theme music.

Overall WWE2K17 is a good wrestling game, a big improvement from 2K16. I know I will be playing this game for a long time.

Netflix’s The OA: A Partial Review

Full Disclosure: I labelled this a partial review as I am only 3 episodes into the series. Christmas time will do that to a man’s binging abilities.

I first caught wind of Brit Marling in the 2011 sci-fi drama Another Earth, which she starred in as well as co-wrote with director Mike Cahill. The film’s pacing is a slow burn, but the simple and immediate pay off of the film’s finale is so effective and impactful that you can forgive all prior sins it might have committed. I found the same to be true with her other 2011 sci-fi film, Sound of My Voice, (this one written with Zal Batmanglij). Also a slow burn, but this time I was ready for it. Again, simple yet impactful wrap-up that made the movie for me.

The other film she co-wrote with Batmanglij, The East, was a departure from sci-fi, and more political/thriller focused that was also an engaging story.

It was with these experiences that upon seeing her name, as well as Batmanglij’s attached to the new Netflix series The OA (pronounced Oh-Ay, not like the Green Lantern’s HQ), I immediately set aside the first hour to get started. I wasn’t concerned with what it might be about because as soon as I saw she was involved, I was in.

The OA begins when Prairie, a blind girl who has been missing for the previous 7 years, randomly shows up on a bridge miraculously with her sight. She returns home to parents’ house, and while her mother and father want to help her get back to normal, that is the furthest thing from Prairie’s mind.

What I can say so far is that the slow-burn style that Brit and her co-writers have used previously is much better suited for this type of format. This way frees them up to character and world build the way their kind of writing demands. They can still hit the cliffhangers and impacting moments every time they hit the hour mark, but they aren’t confined to the space the way they are with feature films.

So far, I’m really enjoying how the story is playing out. Each episode contains its own twists and turns that, for me at least, still have me guessing as to what the hell is actually going on.

So far, and I don’t see this changing over the next 5 episodes, it is a high recommend from me. It’s on par with Netflix’s earlier hit, Stranger things as far as the mystery/thriller aspects go. Furthermore, if you want an idea of how the show will go, but don’t want to commit the full 8 hours yet, I would suggest trying out Another Earth and Sound of My Voice because besides being great films, the tone and pacing of those are almost identical to this show.

All 8 episodes of The OA are currently streaming on Netflix. Check it out.

New Images Released Of Pennywise In It Remake

Well, it is still happening. The remake of IT rolls on with its production and now we have a couple of new images of this version of Pennywise. Now, nothing will ever beat Tim Curry’s version, but this one looks like they are going for a more overtly sinister version in his clown form this time around.

I am sure I will see this one when it hits VOD or Blu-Ray, but now I just kind of want to go watch the original again. What are your thoughts on this new killer clown?

Why Horror Movies Are No Longer Scary – An Editorial

If it is one thing that fandoms like to do is bitch and moan about their particular obsessions, how it doesn’t live up to the experiences and the expectations one had when they were first introduced to whatever their fandom is and one of the most vocal and unapologetic is the horror community.

Their biggest complaint is that horror movies made today simply aren’t scary anymore. I personally love horror movies, as do, I am sure, a lot of you reading this. The first horror movies to scare the hell out of me were Return of the Living Dead and Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2.

I saw these at a very young age when home video was in its infancy and I still believed what the television had to show me was real. I mean, I still believed that some fairy came in the night and took the teeth that had fallen out of my face and traded it for money, so I was not the most logical of humans when I was 6 years old.

Now I go back and watch those same movies and I laugh along with the joke that they are laying out. It is well known that both of those movies are more comedy than horror with some wonderful gore elements thrown in for us hounds, but that got me to thinking, why don’t I find these movies scary anymore? What ever happened to that sense of foreboding and dread that circled my gut when I see something horrific on the screen and I came to the conclusion that I simply grew up.

That’s not to say that I lost the love for the genre. If anything it has grown since then because I understand the magic behind the scares. Also what scares me has drastically changed since that point of my life.

To me the slasher style killers like Jason and Michel Myers are just fantasy, but people like Sy the Photo Guy from One Hour Photo terrify me. I didn’t take my film to be developed for 2 years after I saw that movie.

Obsession scares me. Several years ago I had my own stalker and working in the news industry where I have watched my co-workers being stalked and have seen the less than stable public who flock to news personalities scare me more than some random knife wielding masked killer. It is the reality to the situation and I can see myself as the person being threatened.

If zombies scare you, I’m sure zombie movies will scare you, however if witches, tooth fairies, aliens and the like don’t scare you, it’s highly unlikely that The Blair Witch Project, Darkness Falls or Signs will do it for you. I don’t go to these movies to be scared, because I know its not going to happen. Gross me out, maybe, creep me out, sure, but not scare me. I’m an adult, not a child. Super natural threats don’t exist, so there is no fear to coincide with seeing such movies.

Also, one has to look at the underlying issue of the fear. If you are afraid of zombies, what about them scares you? You understand that it is someone in extensive makeup and effects, but what about the undead sends that chill up your spine? It is probably a fear of death, being consumed, or changed without your consent.

As an adult you have to look deeper at the fear, because as a kid we are so emotional to begin with that our fight or flight response gets triggered easier when we we are faced with these kind of images.

We as horror fans, ADULT horror fans that is, look at these movies through the wistful eyes of our child hood and pine over the time when these movies had power over us, because we believed what we were seeing. Return of the Living Dead destroyed several years of my life because it said “Based on True Events” at the beginning of the movie which has now been removed from modern releases, at least I have not seen one with that graphic since childhood except for screen shots of the original release. It was because I believed what I could see on TV and that it would not lie to me that I believed that zombies could happen.

Now I know that zombies aren’t real, dead girls won’t crawl out of my TV when I pop in a mysterious VHS and a I won’t be possessed by a demon in an old, scary house so there is no chance for these kind of movies to engage my fear response on a deep level and give me the thrills of my childhood.

That is why, I believe, that movies like the Chucky series, The Freddy movies and others began to emphasize the more comedic aspects to the horror. They are still doing grotesque things to innocents, but the same scares that their core audience (those that saw these movies when they were young) no longer worked, and comedy and horror are intrinsically tied to one another on a very base level in the primordial mind.

I do miss those feelings, that terror that crept up my spine when I watched Freddy Krueger stalk the dreams of teenagers, or watching Dracula bite deep into the neck of a virgin, but like so many things, that flood of terror from watching these movies are sadly lost to ravages of adulthood but I can still look back on that time and appreciate what it did to and for me and I can share that same feeling that I had at that age with my nieces and nephews when, against their parents’ wishes, I pop in a copy of Night of the Living Dead and scare the shit out of them.

Geek Nerdery’s Trailer Park!

Some trailers got released and they are for highly anticipated movies.

First up Keanu Reeves is back in John Wick 2.  Really the first John Wick movie should not have been good.  Like at all.  When you explain it to people they look at you weird.  Like a movie where Keanu gets mad because someone killed his dog and he goes on a shooting rampage after the mob isn’t a movie you would want to see.  But it actually is.  So now we’re back and it looks like we’re getting Keanu and Larry Fishburn in a movie together again.  Check it out:

After that is a trailer for a movie that for me falls into the “I don’t know if this is a good idea” category with Blade Runner 2049.  I mean I hope they prove that I’m wrong and that it holds up to the original but I always get worried about movies like this.  Who knows.  At least we’ll get to see Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford have a brood off.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GDscTTE-P-k

And lastly for this trip to the park I’m including the trailer for Despicable Me 3.  Trey Parker going from the foul mouthed animation we’re used to into a full on kids movie as an 80’s styled bad guy to trouble Gru and his team.  Seems like everything I could want.

Weathering WildStorm : WildStorm Chamber of Horrors

It’s holiday time so let’s do a holiday book! But let’s face it, we know where Geek Nerdery came from, the only holiday here is Halloween! Ok, so what we have here is WildStorm’s attempt at their very own “Treehouse of Horror.” Remember when those started, there was a framing story of the Simpson kids telling scary stories to each other, and we have that here. The team, sitting around in the Smithsonian telling spooky stories. Some are stories from their past, a history of Tapestry that Zealot knows, or in Reno’s case, a horrible dream!

There’s not too much here. Reno keeps having a nightmare of visiting his parents’ graves, them rising as zombies, turning into Daemonites, trying to kill him and succeeding. We’ll find out more about Reno’s background later, but it’s that as a kid some Daemonites burned down his folks’ house and he carries the guilt of not being there to save them. Him telling this story to Savant gets the whole ball of wax going.

The Awesome 80’s Podcast podshort for Rogue One. (Spoiler Heavy)

Last night, like so many of us at the GeekNerdery, I attended the late showing of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (in ultra realistic ultra 3 ultra D no less) with one Michael James Carlson, one of the fine gentlemen that runs The Awesome 80’s Podcast. Afterwards, we took to Steak N Shake and laid down our thoughts on the movie over steaks and shakes.  The bedlam that followed is below for your listening pleasure.

Big thanks to Michael and Glen from Awesome 80’s for letting me back in the Co-Host game!

first bridge crew member from Star Trek Discovery finely announced

many recognise her as Sasha Williams on The Walking Dead, Sonequa Martin-Green will be taking on a pivotal role on the crew of the starship Discovery. Playing Lieutenant Commander Rainsford who serves as “number one”, a position first established by Majol Berett in the TOS pilot “the menagerie”  and later as Captain Picard’s pet name for Commander Riker.

according to ex-showrunner Bryan Fuller, Rainsford will be the focus of Star trek Discovery. Describing her as a “lieutenant commander with caveats” he went on to tell Entertainment Weekly:

We’ve seen six series from the captain’s point of view… To see a character from a [new] perspective on the starship — one who has different dynamic relationships with a captain, with subordinates, it gave us richer context.

At first it may seem a bit disconcerting to have a star trek that won’t focus on the captain, however, keep in mind that previous star trek incarnations have ultimately been ensamble shows so this could be an opportunity for a  unique perspective.

There has never been a star trek series without klingons. this will be no different as three Klingons have also been announced!

the status of forehead makeup is at this time unknown

From the highly anticipated “American Gods” adaptation Chris Obi will portray T’Kuvma and Shazad Latif (Dr Jekyll on Penny Dreadful) will play his protege Commander Kol, the two are apparently trying to unite the Klingon houses (to find out how successful they will be check out he TNG episodes “Sins of the Father” and “Reunion”).  Joining them is shakespearean actress Mary Chieffo as Battle Deck Commander L’Rell, at an imposing 6 ft Chieffo will no doubt channel a bit of Klingon antagonists Lursa and B’Etor into her performance.
