Legends of Tomorrow gets snubbed on crossover invite, Doesn’t need it.

I don’t know how many of you are watching even watching the CW Arrowverse anymore. I want to say I don’t blame you, then make a snide remark about Guggenheim’s continued decimation of a once proud group of shows, but I can’t. I myself have only been keeping up with Legends this season. The plan is to eventually catch up with Arrow just to see if maybe it’s getting better, knowing in my heart that it probably isn’t.

But it’s crossover season, so I tuned in this week. While I haven’t kept up with the individual shows, the first thing the crossover taught me was that I don’t want, or need to catch up with Flash, and probably the same for Supergirl.

This isn’t to say that the crossover was not any good. It had a lot of great moments, but that’s for another piece. This is about the Legends’ place, or lack thereof, in this year’s crossover.

Legends is, for lack of a better word, insane. Each week seems to be a bigger dare as to what they can get away with, and I’m absolutely loving it. So when a magical item shows up in the crossover, and the gang start relying on the tech nerds to crack it, I was more than a little bothered by it. You’ve got Constantine RIGHT THERE on the Waverider!

But then the midseason finale for Legends came on, and instantly all was forgiven. It quickly became apparent that not only did Legends not NEED to participate this year, but doing so would have only slowed them down.

For those not following, Legends has a get out of responsibility free card. They have a time machine, and are on the search for magical creatures this season. When you have those cards to play, you can do damn near anything you want.

Without revealing too much, Constantine has managed to completely screw up the whole of reality, and now must set things straight with the help of a shapeshifter and a cat. Believe me, it’s weirder than it sounds.

They try over and over to set the timeline back to order, and along the way , this happens:

This happens to be one of my two favorite timelines that are made and unmade over the course of the episode. There are more on YouTube for you to discover on your own…oh, fine, one more won’t hurt.

https://youtu.be/HDNdZpj_Sbg

Did I mention how ridiculous this show is? Maybe you’re a fan of the darker, grittier DC, and I am too, but come on. Singing puppets. How can you not love it? I know I keep saying it, but right now, Legends is the best of the Arrowverse. Full stop.  After this episode, I agree with the decision to leave Legends out of the crossover, but for a different reason. The showrunners had their actors’ already grueling schedule in mind. I’m glad they didn’t do it because it would have ruined the Legends midseason finale.

Zack Snyder’s Vision of an Evil Superman finally realized…by James gunn.

Hey everyone, Sometimes Mike here. Between living in hotels and also locking myself out of GN.com, I’ve been away for a bit. But with the hotel’s wi-fi, and the help of some guy named Bryan in GN IT,  I’m back now, and what have I got for you? No, I didn’t get you any T-shirts. I didn’t know what sizes to get, or if you’d even wear them if I got them for you.

No. Today, I’ve got a new trailer for you. The movie is called Brightburn, and while James Gunn’s name is stamped prominently on the trailer, as well as shamelessly on the above title, it was written by his brothers, Brian and Mark Gunn, and directed by David Yarovesky.

The tagline goes thus: What if a child from another world crash-landed on Earth, but instead of becoming a hero to mankind, he proved to be something far more sinister

Sounds familiar, and you’ll spend the trailer making note of all the similarities to you know who. Superman…in case you didn’t know who but didn’t want to ask for fear of looking silly.

Give it a look:

I mean, they even used the same font from Man of Steel. And I haven’t looked that closely into it, but the music sounds very close. Zack Snyder’s vision of making the DCEU’s Superman (or at least, this movie’s version of an alien that for copyright reasons definitely probably isn’t Supes) the evil overlord of Injustice fame is coming true, at the hands of a group of people very capable of making it worth seeing. At least we know there might be decent, unambiguous character development this time around.

Superhero horror is the next logical step in this equation, and let’s be honest, it’s taken a lot longer to hit the big screens than you figure it would. This looks interesting for sure, and my curiosity is more than a little piqued at the timing of such a movie, what with Gunn getting the boot from Disney, and half the DCEU’s future being a giant question mark. Is this a play to prove something to the ill-fated, lackluster WB/DC movie-verse, or is it a move in spite of them? Either way, James Gunn’s money is in the pot, so I think we’re in for something special.

Brightburn hits theaters May 24th, 2019.

What did you think of the first Brightburn trailer? Let us know in the comments.

The midnight drive-in: enemy mine & innerspace

This week we go Full Quaid.  Luckily it’s full Dennis Quaid otherwise we’d be in big trouble. First up we see him get marooned on a planet with an alien and they have to work out their differences in Enemy Mine.  Then we see him get shrunk and injected into Martin Short . . . where they have to work out their differences in Innerspace.  After that it’s chatting about The Legend Of Hill House, Christmas Specials, and Hostiles.

Let’s Talk Avengers: Endgame

This morning I saw on Facebook that the first trailer for Avengers: Endgame got dropped. After a few viewing throughout the day here’s what I have to say.

I’m liking what I saw… To me it felt like Avengers: AoU because how bleak it was. Stark talking about dying floating in space, I can see him getting Rescue[d]. Capt. is clean shaven and is worried about the future and I got all electrified when he gave his “Not sure what to do if it doesn’t work” speech. A down and out Steve Rogers fighting to survive, it can get nasty.

Hawkeye or Ronin both good characters in the comics. I don’t mind the costume change. Barton slice and dicing probably mad his family disappeared in the snap.

So! GOTG wasn’t highlighted much in the trailer and no tears over that. Scott Lang returns, how nice. Hopefully we find out how he excepted the Quantum Realm.

Thor, Banner not much to them in the trailer I hope A:EG isn’t focused on Thor like the last film. And! If you seen the set photos and the dirt sheets talking about time travel, not a fan. Don’t want to relive Marvel’s Avengers all over again. Could come out as a What If? story.

So what do you think of the trailer, comment below with your fan theories or fantasy bookings. Massive!

Marvel reveals their endgame

Ever since the end of Infinity War we’ve been waiting.  Antman and The Wasp gave us a quick glimpse on who could be left to help our heroes but we wanted more. Finally we get a look at what world we’re left with. How our heroes are coping with the loses.  Now it looks like they are ready to take that step forward and fix everything.  Take a look at the Avengers Endgame trailer.

Final Reckoning: The Finale Part 2

It’s finally the final episode of the finale! We go over the reunion, take your phone calls, and talk about offense language. We also go on a self-congratulatory segment about our 100th episode that happened several weeks ago. Thanks everyone for your support for our show, we definitely appreciate it. We’re going on hiatus but we’ll see you for Season 33!

Remembering Dynamite Kid

It’s being reported that Tom Billington better known as the Dynamite Kid has passed away today on his 60th birthday.

Dynamite was one half of the tag team duo the British Bulldogs along with Davey Boy Smith. The Bulldogs won tag team gold at WrestleMania 2 defeating The Dream Team (Valentine and Beefcake).

My favorite memories of Dynamite came from the Bulldogs vs. Hart Foundation from the 80’s. Their tag matches were stiff and brutal. It wasn’t until later in life when I watched Dynamite in Japan. His bouts with Tiger Mask were legendary.

Back in 2013 Highlights got the opportunity to sit down with Billington to talk about his career and his thoughts on the Benoit murderers.

In An Absent Dream By Seanan McGuire Review

Title: In an Absent Dream

Author: Seanan McGuire

Reviewer: Carey Gibbons

Genre: Fantasy, Portal Fiction

Suggested Age: Adults, Teens

What is this book about? This is the fourth installment in McGuire’s Wayward Children series of novellas. The beauty of this series though is that you can read the books out of order. While they all connect, it doesn’t matter which order you read them in – with the exception of Beneath the Sugar Sky (read that one after Every Heart a Doorway). This book is the story of Lundy, who we meet as an adult in Every Heart a Doorway. This is the story of how she stumbles through a door into the Goblin Market and learns to ask for nothing because everything has a price – even the answers to questions. And little girls and boys who don’t learn that lesson, well, they might just fly away.

Review: I am completely in love with this series. This fourth installment (out in January of 2019) is not a disappointment. The story of Lundy’s Goblin Market fits with the rest of the series – the stories of children who fall into worlds other than our own and for one reason or another are kicked out. The Goblin Market is like the other worlds we have so far encountered – charming and wondrous at the outset but more complicated and full of traps as the story goes on. McGuire is a master storyteller and with this volume continues a series that is the perfect mix of fairy story and horror story.

Alice Isn’t Dead By Joseph Fink Review

Title: Alice Isn’t Dead

Author: Joseph Fink

Reviewer: Carey Gibbons

Genre: Horror

Suggested Age: Adults

What is this book about? Keisha’s wife Alice goes missing. She’s been missing so long that Keisha has her declared dead. But then Keisha starts seeing Alice in the background of national news reports. She takes on a job with a cross country trucking company in order to find Alice. She ends up finding a lot of things that aren’t Alice, and ends up a pawn in a shadow war being waged across the country. She ends up finding out what goes on in all of the little nooks and crannies of America, places that people drive past every day without a thought. And the title of the book is completely true. Alice isn’t dead. But she’s also not the person Keisha thought she knew.

Review: This book is based on a podcast of the same name, which I admit to not having heard because I’m not super awesome at listening to podcasts. But the premise intrigued me and I bought this book the day it came out. I wasn’t disappointed. Alice Isn’t Dead was written by one half of the Welcome to Night Vale creative team. It’s a lot creepier and less funny than WTNV and very good. It also features a character, Keisha, who suffers from crippling anxiety, and that was presented in a very realistic way (even if the circumstances are supernatural). Some of the ideology behind the shadow war in this book is a little heavy handed, but it’s overall a fun, creepy read. I will never look at truckers, police officers, or road trips the same way again.

Providence By Caroline Kepnes Review

Title: Providence

Author: Caroline Kepnes

Reviewer: Carey Gibbons

Genre: Horror, Thriller, Love Story

Suggested Age: Adults

What is this book about? Jon and Chloe are 8th graders who really understand each other. They’re best friends and Chloe doesn’t care that Jon’s a little weird. But one day Jon is kidnapped. He’s missing for four years. But one day he wakes up in the basement of the local mall surrounded by plants, with a heavily annotated copy of The Dunwich Horror on his bedside table. He escapes from the mall and his only thoughts are of Chloe. But life has moved on and Jon is changed somehow. People who get near him get sick. Jon is afraid to see Chloe. Before he can hurt her in any way, he runs. But Chloe isn’t going to let him go so easy.

Review: This book kind of pulls a bait and switch. It hints at Lovecraftian horror, and Lovecraft definitely plays a big part. But the bulk of the book is dedicated to Jon and Chloe pining away for each other. A bit later in the book, we’re introduced to Eggs, a detective trying to solve a series of bizarre deaths several years after the initial events of the book. He starts out as interesting but also gets wrapped up in this weird love story. This book reads like Nicholas Sparks has discovered Lovecraft and also vaguely remembers “Rappaccini’s Daughter” from high school. It was unique, but maybe not for horror purists.

The Midnight Drive-In: Endgame & Deathrow Gameshow

Reality TV just doesn’t cut it anymore so we have to take things to a higher level.  How about a live TV show where one person is the prey and has to fend off a band of hunters?  Or how about a gameshow where prisoners on deathrow try to win prizes for their families after their death or maybe even their freedom?  If either of these sound great then you’re in luck.  First off we’re talking Endgame.  After that we take a trip to the wackier side with Deathrow Gameshow.  Also we talk some Walking Dead, Daredevil, and The Meg.
