Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 Trailer Breaks The Internet

James Gunn posted on Facebook that the trailer for Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 has become the biggest trailer debut for Marvel Studios yet.

jamesgunn

I have watched the trailer at least ten times since it debuted online on Saturday.  Guardians was a surprise hit for me as I knew nothing about the team other than they had been in a Marvel coming at some point in history.  So when I went in with no expectations I was not expecting to leave the theater with a new favorite movie in my top 5 of all time.

I told a friend once that I felt like I did the first time I watched Star Wars as a kid.  He was surprised but for me I just knew this was something special and I was hoping that it being connected to this bigger Marvel Cinematic Universe would not eventually drag the franchise down and making it fall in line with all the others.  Don’t get me wrong I am a big MCU fanboy but this feels like something different.  Something special.  I just didn’t want that shiny wearing off when you have guidelines to fulfill when it has to fall in line with the other films.

Well this trailer looks like Gunn and company are still going full steam ahead on doing their own fun filled space adventure.  I can’t wait to check it out next summer.  Have you checked it out yet?

Weathering WildStorm : WildC.A.T.s 10 – 13

For those just joining us, I decided to map out a chronology of the history of the WildStorm Universe. A “beloved” part of the Image Comics group in the early ’90s. This week I’m covering four issues of their flagship title “WildC.A.T.s” which featured the eternal war between two alien races, the Kherubim, and the Daemonites. Not that these issues advance any of that story at all.

I’m not going to mince words when these issues came out, I was really torn. I didn’t like them that much, but I really loved the new heroes it introduced. Well, not Huntsman so much, but Savant, Mr. Majestic, and Soldier! But that was back in the day when I didn’t have that much comic reading under my belt, and scarcely knew the name Chris Claremont. Now that I’ve grown up, and read all those classic X-Men back issues and I’m more on board with this run than I was as a kid. Hell, thanks to “Jay & Miles X-Plain the X-Men” I can’t help but hear some of Wu’s narration in their “Angry Claremontian Narrator” voice. I’m a more nuanced comic reader now that I’ve learned some more history… some 20 odd years later, and I actually kind of enjoy it. Mind you, not as much as I did later issues of “WildC.A.T.s” but I didn’t dislike this as much as I did in my youth.

The first issue in the arc kicks off with Zealot trying to combat train Priss down by the waterfront near New York. Now, I have no idea if this kind of area even exists in New York City, but it does in the WSU, so we’re going have to accept it. Priss isn’t high on becoming a Coda warrior and Zealot seems chill not to take it that far (well, chill as a clef blade to the neck) when suddenly a ship explodes into the sky featuring a wounded man named Alabaster Wu. Mr. Wu’s being pursued by a beast known as a Raksha. Zealot makes short work of the Raksha, decapitating it in front of Priss, as she goes to investigate the ship while Wu takes the hell off. Turns out, Wu knows Jacob, and he needs his help! But getting to Marlowe is easier than it sounds, as he’s being chased by Priss. Oh yeah, that cut up Raksha, it totally infected Priss, taking over her mind and body, giving her a mad on to hunt down Wu.

Zealot is working her way through the ship, and she comes upon a small and passed out girl. She vows to protect this child from the beasts and starts kicking some Raksha booty. Eventually, the girl’s protector, the Huntsman, shows up and they declare a truce after a bit of back and forth between them. During the battle, Zealot took some damage from a Raksha, and a Raksha has blood that’ll eff you up, it’s a “turn you into a literal Raksha” eff you up kind of problem, so Huntsman wants to help get Zealot someplace where they can get her some help. I mean, a good idea would be to go meet back up with the rest of the WildC.A.T.s, right?

Well, the rest of the team is busy. See, Wu got a hold of Jacob and Jacob goes to meet Wu alone. While this is happening, Raksha possessed Priss convinces the team that Wu is trouble and that they need to go save Jacob from him. So Void teleports the team to where Wu and Jacob are and they’re suddenly under attack from the Troika (Attica, H.A.R.M., and Slag) who are joined by Void Jr. AKA Providence. It’s all a set up by the true villains of the story, Tapestry and Lord Soma. They hired the Troika, who I guess brought Providence along for the hell of it, and are quite pleased with to see a Raksha take over one of their enemies already, Priss.

Who is Tapestry? She’s some kind of witch that can undo your life’s events and rewrite them. Not sure if she’s overwriting these events in reality, or just in one’s brain. Either way, in the end, it’ll bend your personality to whatever Tapestry wants. Lord Soma? Oh, he hangs out with Tapestry. That’s about it. We’re not even sure if he’s a Kherubim or Daemonite high lord, like everyone else who has the title “Lord” in WildStorm books. Maybe Lord is just his first name, and his parents didn’t spell it “Lorde” because he’s a precious little snowflake with his gray skin, facial tattoos and on point mustache and soul patch game.

Is Arrow The Best Batman TV Show?

I’ve always said that how I thought Arrow got on the air was that someone went and pitched a Batman TV show but got turned down as they felt that the Batman property was too big to be on TV.  They looked at each other and said “Is there another billionaire hero we can just put in his place?  Green Arrow is rich right?”

I’m not saying that that’s a bad thing as it has worked out perfectly.  On paper there is no way this show should work.  A super hero show on the CW where we explore the relationship between Oliver Queen, Laurel (Dinah) Lance, and their peers.  Ugh.  Sounded horrible.  I passed until I kept hearing after the first season that it was actually pretty good.  I saw it on Netflix and figured why not.  After the first episode I was hooked.

Since then we’ve seen them borrow plenty from the Batverse.  Deathstroke while not defined as a Bat Villian has played a big part in the Bat mythos.  Rhas Al Ghul and the League Of Assassins were the center point of season 3.  Similar starts being portrayed as a dark vigilante.  A secret headquarters full of gadgets and weapons.  Eventually creating a superhero family around him.  Last season his tech savy girlfriend and side kick Felicity got shot and was in a wheelchair giving her an Oracle feel about her.

This week we’ve been watching a 4 part crossover between all the CW DC shows (which we can thank Arrow for all the spin off shows) called INVASION!  Slight spoilers below.

On Flash we saw that a handfull of the heroes were abducted by the Dominators.  On Arrow we find that the heroes (Oliver, Sarah, John, Ray, and Thea) were hooked up to a machine that put them in a dream state where they were living out what would be their perfect life.  This immediately made me think of . . . yep something from Batman.

Specifically Batman: The Animated Series.  In an episode titled Perchance To Dream Bruce Wayne awakens to find that his parents never died.  He’s happy and it turns out that someone else is Batman so he can just relax and enjoy life as Bruce Wayne.  But of course nothing ever stays happy.  What I didn’t know about this episode was that it was written by horror novelist Joe R. Lansdale.

There is always minor things like this that make me think more and more that I was right about the original pitch meeting.  I’m not sure why I’m okay with that happening on this show as any other show stealing ideas, villians, or storylines I would not be very excited about it.  But with the CW DC Universe I am perfectly fine.  Maybe it’s my distaste of Gotham that lets me enjoy this as my Batman alternative.  Regardless I’ll still be tuning in every week.  What do you think?

Weathering WildStorm : Gen13 Vol. 1

When the powers that be at Geek Nerdery asked me to write a little something for the site, they didn’t know that I’d been diligently hard at work mapping out the chronology of the WildStorm Comics Universe. As soon as I let that slip, they said “Bring it on!” in not so many words.

Bit of background: the WildStorm Universe started as part of the Image comics in 1992. It eventually splintered off into it’s own universe and was sold to DC as an imprint. WildStorm was officially closed down in 2011. The most well known series were “WildC.A.T.s,” “Gen13” and “the Authority.” I hit back issue bins, raided my own long box, found some trade paperbacks, hit Comixology (as well as some less desirable sites) to try an arrange the WildStorm books into a single 19 year narrative. Now I’m going back and re-reading these stories again to make sure I got it right. This is something I’m oddly passionate about, and if sorting through thousands of comics and coming up with a timeline doesn’t qualify as Geek Nerdery, I’m not sure what does.

We’re picking up in the middle of the WildStorm’s first big story arc, and with my favorite series (until “the Authority” came along) “Gen13” with it’s first five issue mini-series.

At long last, John Lynch becomes the hero that he was always destined to be! I mean, we still have almost the entire page run of “Gen13” Vol. 1 before we get to that! And it’s about damn time! It might be obvious, but much of how the early part of my reading chronology is arranged is watching the heroic rise of John Lynch. Look at the section named “Part 1 : WildStorm Rising” and you’ll find “Gen13” Vol. 1 right smack in the middle of it! Maybe I’m not being clear, but “Gen13” was one of my favorite books when I was younger, with “WildC.A.T.s” being a close second and I always thought a lot about John Lynch and his history.

I fanboyed hard for this book, I even bought 2 copies of each issue so I could cut out the coupon and mail away for what ended up being “Gen13” Vol. 2 issue 0. I gave my cut up versions to my Cousin Sean, just to spread that WildStorm love! I remember getting that 1/2 issue from my friend Randy because I’d missed out on that issue of “Wizard.” I should reverse that, at the time Randy wasn’t my friend, but a good acquaintance who was also into comics and ska music who I formed a solid friendship with years later. But issues 0 and 1/2 are still a bit of time away, for now, we need to get to issue 1!

This issue opens in the late ’70s with Stephen and Rachael Callahan getting taken down! In front of their children, lil Matthew and Nicole, how horrible! Even worse, Frank Colby was the trigger-man on Stephen! Well, that might be worse for us, see, we know both of these characters, I’m not sure at that time if Colby knew Callahan or not, but he did need to be convinced to pull that trigger. After that, the team from I/O brings in the kids as instructed, fulfilling Dane’s warning in “Team 7: Dead Reckoning” that “Craven wants your children.”

I start to get really in depth, and we don’t need that cluttering the page, so obviously, a lot more after the jump!

Review: Doomed! The Untold Story of Roger Corman’s The Fantastic Four

Moviemaking is hard. There are a lot of forces that have to combine in just the right way for you to be successful. To get a cast and crew together requires a hundred schedules to sync. You need equipment. You need film. You need time and patience. If you’re working on an established property, as they were in this movie, you need the rights to the property and all the individual characters.  Most importantly, if you’re going to get anywhere, you need money.

But what actually killed Roger Corman’s The Fantastic Four? WAS it money? Was it the film’s quality (or lack thereof)Was it the closed door Hollywood forces that be? Could it have been Avi Arad? The answer is maybe all of the above.

In the same vein of The Death of Superman Lives: What Happened?Doomed! takes a look behind the scenes of the 1994 movie and where it all went wrong. Through interviews with the cast and crew –most of whom have a shoulder shrugging, water under the bridge attitude about the whole experience– the filmmakers unravel the death of the Fantastic Four almost like a murder mystery.

To look at the footage that is shown, it feels really obvious that this was never going to work. (Even the actors began to have their doubts the further into production they got.) To be fair though, it was a different time. The superhero movie was still not the money shoveling juggernaut it is today, and with the exception of Batman, the genre was still not being taken seriously. That said, wait for the limo scene, because…damn. You’ll know it when you see it.

If you’re interested in moviemaking, this one is worth a look. (If for no other reason than as a lesson on how not to let Hollywood screw you over.) Comic book fans might enjoy it as a way to either feel sadness or elation at the movie’s ultimate demise.

For those of you who want to make the effort, the finished product of the movie is available around, because that’s what the internet does. If you have seen it, let us know if it’s any good. I mean, bright blue spandex aside, it HAS to be better than Fan4stic. Right?

Doomed! The Untold Story of Roger Corman’s The Fantastic Four is out now in time for the holidays on DVD/Blu-ray.

Why the World Doesn’t Need Superman (to have his own show)

After Tyler Hoechlin’s pitch perfect turn as the Man of Steel on Supergirl’s premiere episode, the internet lit up with demands that Supes return to the small screen with a show of his own. At first glance, it feels right; Hoechlin, as well as the writing team on Supergirl, did such a great job at bringing some levity back to the big, blue boy scout, that naturally, you want more. He took turns doing the day saving with Supergirl, he thanked random DEO agents for their service, and Rao save us, he actually smiled! Refreshing isn’t strong enough of a word to explain the feeling seeing Superman, the REAL Superman, back in action. (Remember when he told that bank robber, “If the bullets didn’t work, right? Why the punching?”? So great.) We get it. We really do.

But let’s not rush into this. Continue reading Why the World Doesn’t Need Superman (to have his own show)

CW Teases The First Arrowverse 4 Show Crossover

Ever since Supergirl moved over to the CW we’ve been waiting.  When does she get to crossover with everyone else?  Last year it was established that Supergirl takes place on a seperate Earth than the others.  With it being on CBS it seemed like a good idea so that it would help keep the number of crossovers to a minimum since cross network crossovers are a bundle of red tape.  Now that she is flying on the CW it was only a matter of time before the barriers between the Earths had to be broken and she brought into the fold.  This event seems to be called Heroes vs. Aliens so what can we expect to see?  The teaser below is just that, a teaser.  Can’t wait to see what they got up their sleeve.

Kevin Smith has proof that a girl can fly.

On his last day of his directing gig on the CW’s Supergirl, Kevin Smith decided to show fans a peek behind the magic veil of television production. In the 9 1/2 minute video that he posted to his Facebook, Smith attempts to keep composure and not geek out (spoiler alert: it doesn’t work out well) as he shows us how it “takes a village” to get a Supergirl in the air.

It’s funny to watch Smith fanboy out at the process. It’s also cool to see everything that goes into getting those moments of action. As Smith says, it really is something that we as viewers take for granted because we only see the end result.

Give it a look below.

Kevin Smith directs the 11th episode of Supergirl entitled “Supergirl Lives” (assuredly more than just a coincidental reference to his attachment to the ill-fated Superman Lives) which airs later this season on Mondays at 8/7 Central on the CW.

Young Justice Season 3 Announced

I’m a fan of cartoons.  Throw in some super heroes and I’m a HUGE fan of cartoons.  One I was a fan of was the DC cartoon Young Justice.  It was fun seeing all the side kicks get their turn in the spotlight and it had a rather unconventional season structure where at the end of season 1 into season 2 it jumped ahead a few months and completely changed the dynamic of the team without any explination so that when the story  unfolded for the season you got to see what these changes were all about.  We were sad when it was announced that it was canceled after Season 2.

There was some lobbying by fans for Netflix to pick it up but it remained pretty silent until today.  There’s no word on where it’s going to be shown but it looks like Season 3 is moving forward in production so we at least will see something.  Were you a fan of the show?

Lego Batman Needs a Friend in Trailer #4

Somewhere almost dead center between the camp of the neon Schumacher Bat and the angry, ultra-violent Snyder Bat, the Lego Batman sits quietly in wait…trying to get his BatTV to work.
Today, Warner Bros dropped trailer #4 for the solo Lego Batman movie out next year. After his scene-stealing cameo in 2014’s Lego movie, the Bat is back and he’s flying solo. He’s saving the day and earning the adulation of millions of fans, but still there seems to be something missing in his life. At the insistence of Alfred, Batman reluctantly learns to take responsibility of the young boy he’s adopted, and along the way, builds a team of heroes to help him on his life’s mission.
The Lego Batman movie hits theaters in February 2017 and features the voice talents of Will Arnett, Ralph Fiennes, Rosario Dawson, Zach Galifianakis and Michael Cera.

New Wonder Woman Trailer Brings The Bling

We have been treated to the second Wonder Woman trailer and we get to see more of the island of Themyscira, more World War I action, and lots of bullets bouncing off of wristbands.

I’ve been vocal about my disappointment with Batman V. Superman but have said that anytime Diana was in her gear throwing down it was pretty awesome.  Can’t wait to see what is in store for Wonder Woman’s first theatrical outing in her own film.  What about you?  Check out the new trailer below.

Fox Drops Logan Trailer

Hugh Jackman has been playing Wolverine for almost two decades and in March we’ll get to see him pop the claws one last time.  Taking parts from the Old Man Logan storyline and adding in a few elements of their own we’ll get to see a much older Wolverine in what looks like the not to distant future.  Check out the red band trailer below.

Marvel Unveils Guardians Of The Galaxy Volume 2 Poster And Trailer

The other day Marvel went and let loose their promotional items for probably the property I’m most excited about from them Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2.  When the original movie was announced I was sure it would be the first Marvel movie flop but was ever so happy to see that I was completely wrong.  It has since become my favorite Marvel film of all time.  Check out the trailer below.
