Stephen King Bringing Us Charlie The Choo-Choo

I’m a huge Stephen King nerd.  Like really huge.  So when I heard that Simon & Schuster were putting out a book based on the in book childrens book Charlie the Choo-Choo I was excited.  It is a childrens book that Jake finds in a book store in the Dark Tower series that has a connection to Mid-World.

Coming at the end of November King will once again don a pseudonym to fit in the Dark Tower meta continuity.  As Beryl Evans he’ll be bringing the book to life along with illustrations from Ned Dameron.  From the Press Release:

Engineer Bob has a secret: His train engine, Charlie the Choo-Choo, is alive…and also his best friend. From celebrated author Beryl Evans (a pseudonym for Stephen King) and illustrator Ned Dameron comes a story about friendship, loyalty, and hard work.

Fans of Stephen King’s acclaimed Dark Tower series will recognize Charlie the Choo-Choo as the picture book that shows up in Book Three, The Waste Lands, written by the character Beryl Evans. An Easter egg for devoted fans, a mock-up of the book was recently distributed at San Diego Comic Con, where over 500 fans gathered to claim one of 150 copies available. Now in its completion, fans across the country can bring Charlie the Choo-Choo to their home libraries.

Are you picking this up?  Are you excited for the movie?  Let us know!

24: Legacy Trailer

24: Legacy will find special forces veteran Eric Carter played by Corey Hawkins (Dr. Dre in Straight Outta Compton) haunted by his actions overseas when the followers terrorist leader Sheik Ibrahim Bin-Khalid follow Carter and his compatriots back to the U.S. to get revenge. Carter is then drawn into the bigger plan of the terrorists to launch attacks across America when he’s recruited by former CTU head Rebecca Ingram (Miranda Otto) to stop them. Meanwhile, Ingram’s husband, Senator John Donovan (Jimmy Smits) is running for President. It’s interesting to note that this is the second time that Smits has run for TV president, and he won that election on season seven of The West Wing.

Ash vs. Evil Dead

I’ve been an Evil Dead fanboy since the mid-90’s. My friends mocked my obsession with the series and how I quoted Army of Darkness and Evil Dead 2 relentlessly. At the time, I maintained an Army of Darkness website and knew Bruce Campbell’s personal email address. I’d reach out to him occasionally to “interview” him for my site or just tell him I enjoyed watching him in whatever obscure thing I found of his that week.

I attended horror and comic conventions to hunt down the short films Bruce and Sam Raimi made in high school and college, including the short that started it all, Within the Woods. I made friends with fans in other countries who could ship me different versions of the films with small differences from their American counterparts. I bought foreign posters on eBay and hung them around my small apartment in Chicago when I was in college. I dreamed of Evil Dead 4 and the return of Ash, but at some point I had to give up on the dream and realize it’d never happen.

When the series was announced, I felt like a fucking high schooler again. I was just as excited as I would’ve been if they’d have announced Evil Dead 4. Maybe even more excited. Bruce and Sam were involved, and that’s all I needed to know.

The series picked up right where Army of Darkness left off in the sense of tone and pacing. The series makes no mention of AoD of course, but just as the absurdity ramped up through the course of Evil Dead 1-3, the absurdity ramped up an appropriate amount in the series.

While the series takes some missteps (like showing the “force” as it chased Ash’s car through the country), generally speaking I’ve enjoyed the expansion of the mythology and the story of how Ash hasn’t really grown or matured throughout the whole demon-killing process.

Let’s just hope they get back to the cabin soon.

$10 Rasslin: Saturday Nitro Live

High Spots has released a follow up to their $5 Wrestling series with $10 Rasslin but this time around our two favorite commentators Marty and Colt are no where to be seen. Instead you have comedian Tim Statum and Gene Jackson pervading commentary and cheap jokes.

The difference between $5 and $10 Wrestling… Is nothing at all, it’s still bad. But Gene Jackson’s commentary makes up for it. But some of your favorites do return to the ring like Freight Train, Dynamite and Jeff Hart and a few new superstars are added like Jason Jr. a man dressed in black with a black hockey mask and Mikey, a Michael Myers knockoff who is drunk because he can’t stand on his own two feet.

Once the main show is over you are treated to a handful of extras with a match between Joe Hogan vs Antonio Garza, and a few backstage interviews.

Lastly… I’m a bit disappointed with $10 Rasslin I wasn’t feeling the awfulness that came from this three hour show. Plus the lack of Marty and Colt was felt, but as I said Gene Jackson made up for it.

Review: Garfield Kart (Nintendo 3DS)

I was hoping this game was going to be a Mario Kart clone, well it kinda is because of the racing and all but other than that Garfield Kart is a bad game in general. The controls are loose and clunky and needed to be tighten up. There are only sixteen tracks and they all are about the same. On the plus side you do have a cast of characters from the Garfield universe like Jon, Liz, Arlene and even Pooky.

The music in the game is repetitive and gets old fast and the power ups don’t work half the time because if you don’t read the digital manual you won’t know what they do. For example, lasagna will make you go faster and a spring will make you jump a few feet ahead.

I dropped thirty bones on this game and after three hours of game play I have beaten every challenge and there isn’t any online multiplayer to keep me coming back. Don’t even bother dropping cash on Garfield Kart, get Mario Kart instead.

Nintendo Shows Off Nintendo Switch

Nintendo seems ready to change the face of gaming once again after stumbling out of the gate with the Wii U.  There had been some rumblings of a new console on the way but today it was shown off to be a combination console and handheld system.  Take a look at their announcement trailer and see for yourself.

Fox Drops Logan Trailer

Hugh Jackman has been playing Wolverine for almost two decades and in March we’ll get to see him pop the claws one last time.  Taking parts from the Old Man Logan storyline and adding in a few elements of their own we’ll get to see a much older Wolverine in what looks like the not to distant future.  Check out the red band trailer below.

Marvel Unveils Guardians Of The Galaxy Volume 2 Poster And Trailer

The other day Marvel went and let loose their promotional items for probably the property I’m most excited about from them Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2.  When the original movie was announced I was sure it would be the first Marvel movie flop but was ever so happy to see that I was completely wrong.  It has since become my favorite Marvel film of all time.  Check out the trailer below.

TLH Episode 59 – Baskin and Hausu

Doug and Bryan are on their own this week, as they try to cobble together some intelligent thoughts on two of the most messed up movies we’ve tried to review on the show, the 1977 Japanese film Hausu and 2015’s Turkish film, Baskin. Despite the challenge, they do a good job.

After the break and some feedback, Bryan talks about a ton of October watches including The Shallows, The Toolbox Murders, Eaten Alive, Maniac Cop, The Girl in the Photographs, Don’t go into the Woods, and More Brains! A Return to the Living Dead.

TLH Episode 58 – Alien 2: On Earth and Aliens

This week we take a look at two different sequels to the 1979 classic, Alien. Yes you read that right. We discuss the well known official sequel, Aliens as well as the 1980 unofficial “sequel” Alien 2: On Earth.

We also discuss clowns, Luke Cage, and Steak n’ Shake.

TLH Episode 57 – House of Wax (1953 and 2005)

This week we take a look at a couple of films that have two things in common. One, they both have the same title and two, they both feature “legendary” stars. First is the 1953 House of Wax starring the one and only Vincent Price. Then, we watch a movie in which Paris Hilton takes a pole to the face. (No, not that one.)

After a very massive voicemail, we discuss Ghostheads, The 39 Steps, and Doomed: The Untold Story of Roger Corman’s the Fantastic Four.

TLH Episode 56 – Death Proof and Planet Terror

This week on the show we discuss the Tarantino/Rodriguez epic Grindhouse. Don’t worry. We review the trailers too.

After the break we (of course) get into another wrestling discussion as well as discuss a whole shit load of films including Green Room, Americathon, Critters 2, The Horror Show, Black Dynamite, Starcrash, Chopping Mall, Intruders, Always Watching: A Marble Hornets Story, Doomed: The Untold Story of Roger Corman’s the Fantastic Four, American Horror Story Season 6, Best Friends, and Pick-up.

TLH Episode 55 – Westworld and Futureworld

In anticipation of the upcoming HBO series, we decided to take a break from horror and check out the 70s sci-fi flicks Westworld and Futureworld. (Picture Jurassic Park with robot cowboys.) We also give our thoughts on a couple of Westworld T.V. promos, 80s cartoons, Extrodinary Tales, and Doug tries to talk us into having a Montreal Screwjob with him.
