Review: Doomed! The Untold Story of Roger Corman’s The Fantastic Four

Moviemaking is hard. There are a lot of forces that have to combine in just the right way for you to be successful. To get a cast and crew together requires a hundred schedules to sync. You need equipment. You need film. You need time and patience. If you’re working on an established property, as they were in this movie, you need the rights to the property and all the individual characters.  Most importantly, if you’re going to get anywhere, you need money.

But what actually killed Roger Corman’s The Fantastic Four? WAS it money? Was it the film’s quality (or lack thereof)Was it the closed door Hollywood forces that be? Could it have been Avi Arad? The answer is maybe all of the above.

In the same vein of The Death of Superman Lives: What Happened?Doomed! takes a look behind the scenes of the 1994 movie and where it all went wrong. Through interviews with the cast and crew –most of whom have a shoulder shrugging, water under the bridge attitude about the whole experience– the filmmakers unravel the death of the Fantastic Four almost like a murder mystery.

To look at the footage that is shown, it feels really obvious that this was never going to work. (Even the actors began to have their doubts the further into production they got.) To be fair though, it was a different time. The superhero movie was still not the money shoveling juggernaut it is today, and with the exception of Batman, the genre was still not being taken seriously. That said, wait for the limo scene, because…damn. You’ll know it when you see it.

If you’re interested in moviemaking, this one is worth a look. (If for no other reason than as a lesson on how not to let Hollywood screw you over.) Comic book fans might enjoy it as a way to either feel sadness or elation at the movie’s ultimate demise.

For those of you who want to make the effort, the finished product of the movie is available around, because that’s what the internet does. If you have seen it, let us know if it’s any good. I mean, bright blue spandex aside, it HAS to be better than Fan4stic. Right?

Doomed! The Untold Story of Roger Corman’s The Fantastic Four is out now in time for the holidays on DVD/Blu-ray.

Miz Wins IC Belt On SmackDown! 900th

Last night on the 900th episode of SmackDown! Live The Miz defeated Dolph Ziggler to be come the Intercontinental Champion once again.

I’m happy to see Miz holding the IC belt again, I think Ziggler has run his course in WWE. His latest storyline with the Spirit Squad has fallen flat and I don’t see him getting a major push anytime soon. If he would step away from the E and start having matches on the indies, like a Cody Rhodes my interest in him may return. As for the Miz, he’s been incredible as of late. His back and forth with Bryan Danielson on Talking Smack was good and his in ring work has improved. Hopefully he’ll get a world title soon, the E needs that top heel holding the strap.

The Channel Zero: No-End House Trailer is Here, And It’s Scary Good

Last night the first season of Syfy’s creepypasta anthology series Channel Zero wrapped up with a haunting, brain-scratcher of an episode that left us hungry for more. Thankfully, we don’t have to wait long to see what the series has in store, as Syfy has dropped a teaser trailer for season two today.

This time around the series will focus around the creepypasta story No-End House. Helmed by director Steven Piet (Uncle John), season two stars John Carroll Lynch (American Horror Story, The Invitation) and Amy Forsyth (The Path, Defiance), who are in for some very spooky shenanigans indeed. For a taste of what’s to come, check out the trailer below.

Booking Doctor Who In 2018

I hope everyone is up to date on a possible shake-up for Doctor Who in 2018… Here’s my thoughts on the matter.

If Matt Smith stayed on for another couple years Doctor Who wouldn’t be where it’s at today, in the dumps. Sure you can blame Steven Moffat for Peter Capaldi’s run as the Doctor because those stories were lacking the warmth that Smith brought to the show.

The lack of merchandise sales, I wouldn’t blame Capaldi’s Doctor for that. As a collector of DW action figures there’s a lot more they can do with the classic series characters and if they start reprinting classic DW DVDs that’s more sales. Because some of those DVDs are just over priced.

Another factor is the Doctor’s companions. I don’t think they need to be younger but just a good actor will do. Sure Jenna Coleman (Clara Oswald) had her moments but they were few and far between.

On a side note, one rumor that’s been floating around is bringing back Matt Smith as the Doctor. I think that’s a great idea, but without Moffat writing I don’t know if Chris Chibnall can bring the same magic like Moffat did. But only time will tell.

WWE: Survivor Series (2016) Predictions

This Sunday is the 2016 Survivor Series and it’s RAW vs SmackDown. But before I get to my predictions, allow me to address all these WWE Network specials or “pay per view” every two weeks. I find having these specials every two weeks a bit overwhelming and it’s too much at times. For example, the only match I was looking forward to with Hell in a Cell was Sasha Banks vs Charlotte. Because I know those two can have a good match and they did. Some matches and Network specials I could care less about, just overwhelming.

Now Survivor Series is part of the big four but it’s feeling like Bragging Rights but I digress… To my predictions…

Goldberg is back and wants to face Brock Lesnar in a one on one match… I’ve seen their match at WrestleMania XX and it was awful but I have a small glimmer of hope that this match will be good. Hopefully Goldberg can get the ring rust off because that lock up he had with Rusev looked bad. In the match I can see Lesnar bring Goldberg to Suplex City. But if this match is just a one off for Goldberg, I can see Lesnar winning the match.

In an five on five elimination Survivor Series tag team match with Team RAW (Kevin Owens, Chris Jericho, Roman Reigns, Braun Strowman, and Seth Rollins) vs. Team SmackDown (AJ Styles, Dean Ambrose, Bray Wyatt, Randy Orton and Shane McMahon) (with Luke Harper and James Ellsworth)… This match is stacked and I hope it goes on last. I see Team SmackDown winning this match because SD needs a victory over RAW to keep their momentum going so they won’t be seen as the “B Show”.

Sami Zayn in WWE has done well for himself but he needs that big win. Sure he’s gotten some over Kevin Owens, but it’s time for Zayn to carry a belt and I see him defeating Dolph Ziggler to become the new IC Champion.

I know one thing, the E has this Network special stacked with Survivor Series type matches… So let me give you all a quick run down, if you will. The winners are!

Team SmackDown – Nikki Bella, Becky Lynch, Alexa Bliss, Carmella, and Naomi with Natalya.

Team Raw – The New Day, Sheamus and Cesaro, Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson, Enzo Amore and Big Cass and The Primo and Epico.

Kalisto defeats The Brian Kendrick for the Cruiserweight Championship, to bring the Cruiserweight division to SmackDown.

There you have it, my predictions! But who do you want to see win at Survivor Series? Comment below.

Dave Chappelle Becomes Neegan On SNL

If you were a giant fan of Chappelle’s Show like I was back when it was on then when you heard Dave Chappelle was going to be hosting SNL you had to be excited.  What would we see?  Any classic Chappelle’s Show characters?  Would he be taking on any current trends in America like he did back on Comedy Central?  Well what we got was Chappelle stepping out of an RV as Neegan from the Walking Dead and staring at a line up of his classic characters.  What followed was a perfect short for us missing the old days.  Thanks for bringing them back Dave.  Check it out below.

Ash vs. Evil Dead – 2×07 “Delusion”

After last week’s surprise cameo and non-stop action, we take a second to catch our breath and relax. For a second.

Is Ash losing his mind? Was this whole thing just a bad dream? Is he truly insane and imaging it all after killing his friends in the cabin that fateful night? I guess the only ones that know the truth are Ash and his puppet.

While Ash vs. Evil Dead circles across this internet are calling this a boring filler episode, they’re only 1/2 right. This set up Ba’al as a tough mofo and featured Lucy Lawless in a nurse’s outfit. I mean, how bad could that be?

Major Shake-Up For Doctor Who In 2018

BBC bosses want Doctor Who to feel like “a brand new show” under incoming boss Chris Chibnall… so we can expect a whole new line-up in 2018.

Insiders say the Broadchurch writer will have a “clean slate” to start afresh for his first series – rather bad news for actress Pearl Mackie, who plays new assistant Bill in Steven Moffat’s last run, currently filming for next year.

Pearl, 29, yet to be seen by viewers, is said to have been signed on a one-year contract and is expected to depart with Peter Capaldi, 58, and Moffat after 2017’s Christmas special.

The replacement Time Lord is likely to be played by a younger actor in a bid to help boost the flagging sales of dolls, books, DVDs and toys.

Our source says: “BBC management wants a return to the format from the David Tennant era, when you had a dashing male lead and young female companion.

“Merchandising has dropped off sharply in recent years and there is a strong desire to boost the show’s popularity among kids.”

One way to do that, of course, is by returning to its traditional tea-time slot, rather than the post-Strictly position it languished in last year.

Next year’s show is expected to air in spring rather than autumn, to avoid the Saturday clash with Strictly.

Joey Styles – Issues Open Letter After Being Fired From Evolve

Renowned commentator Joey Styles was fired from EVOLVE over the weekend … and now he’s issued an open letter explaining why he made such a tasteless joke during the event.

In the letter — sent to PW Insider this morning — Styles says, “Friday night, I panicked on camera during the live broadcast of Evolve 72 on FloSlam when I realized that heel manager, Stokely Hathaway and I would be doing our promo at ringside and not in the ring with ring announcer, Joanna Rose as I had anticipated.”

Joey explains that he had originally planned to include Rose in his promo and, having to come up with something different on the spot, became flustered and made a political joke — something he admits that Gabe Sapolsky specifically instructed him not to do.

Styles continues, saying that as a veteran, he should have walked through the segment beforehand and that Sapolsky was justifiably furious. The announcer claims that he apologized to Sapolsky after the show, and told him to fire him publicly, which he did.

Styles also mentions that he apologized to Rose, FloSlam representative Jeremy Botter and the wrestlers in the locker room … claiming that none of those parties were upset.

Why the World Doesn’t Need Superman (to have his own show)

After Tyler Hoechlin’s pitch perfect turn as the Man of Steel on Supergirl’s premiere episode, the internet lit up with demands that Supes return to the small screen with a show of his own. At first glance, it feels right; Hoechlin, as well as the writing team on Supergirl, did such a great job at bringing some levity back to the big, blue boy scout, that naturally, you want more. He took turns doing the day saving with Supergirl, he thanked random DEO agents for their service, and Rao save us, he actually smiled! Refreshing isn’t strong enough of a word to explain the feeling seeing Superman, the REAL Superman, back in action. (Remember when he told that bank robber, “If the bullets didn’t work, right? Why the punching?”? So great.) We get it. We really do.

But let’s not rush into this. Continue reading Why the World Doesn’t Need Superman (to have his own show)

CW Teases The First Arrowverse 4 Show Crossover

Ever since Supergirl moved over to the CW we’ve been waiting.  When does she get to crossover with everyone else?  Last year it was established that Supergirl takes place on a seperate Earth than the others.  With it being on CBS it seemed like a good idea so that it would help keep the number of crossovers to a minimum since cross network crossovers are a bundle of red tape.  Now that she is flying on the CW it was only a matter of time before the barriers between the Earths had to be broken and she brought into the fold.  This event seems to be called Heroes vs. Aliens so what can we expect to see?  The teaser below is just that, a teaser.  Can’t wait to see what they got up their sleeve.
